What to do in/around Southampton?
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:20:35 PM »
Any suggestions besides shopping?

Just found out that BF has to work good part of the week I'm visiting and rather spend my days on the sofa, does anyone have any suggestions of things to do/see in the area?  Transportation might be an issue, but I'm adventurous enough to figure it out.  I live just outside NYC so I'm not afraid to hop on a train or a bus.

I appreciate any suggestions.  :)

hi mekaw,
If you can get to Southampton train station, you can go so many places.  For instance, it's about 35 minutes train ride up to Salisbury, which is a market town, some of which dates back to the middle ages.  Salisbury also has an impressive cathedral, if you're into that sort of thing, which boasts the tallest spire in England.  You could catch a taxi into town from the station...or take a walk in (though it's been quite cold lately.)

If you're not into going into Salisbury itself, you can catch a bus from salisbury train station out to Stonehenge!  It's only a few miles out from town and though I don't know the exact schedule, I've often seen tour buses for Stonehenge leaving from the station.

But from Southampton there are many places you could go by train, at least...

Good luck, hope you have a good visit, whatever you do!

I found this link with tourist information on it, you may find it helpful. http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/tourism/Default.asp#0

The Maritime Museum there has some interesting information on the Titanic, which was built in Southampton...

I hope you have a fun time there!  :)

Thanks for the suggestions!!  I did want to check out the Maritime Museum - something that he hasn't even done and he's lived there 5 years.  Taking a trip to Salisbury might be nice too.  I have to look into the tour bus to Stonehenge - that would be cool.

I think the train station is pretty close.  I know the ferry to the Isle of Wight is right across the street and I was thinking of taking a bike over there one day.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know the area a bit better.  He doesn't like for me to go out walking by myself.  I forget I'm looking the wrong way into traffic - or is it the right way!  At least in London they remind you on the crosswalks!

I can't wait to fly!  We haven't seen each other in over 2 months and I don't think I can go another day!!

Mekaw,

I live near Southampton in Gosport (across the harbor from Portsmouth). Personally, I don't think there's a lot to do in Southampton, however they do have a fairly decent mall.   As someone else mentioned you can get to many different places from Southampton.   I would recommend spending an afternoon in Winchester.  It's a gorgeous city and I'm not sure if you're very interested in Jane Austen but she's buried at Winchester Cathedral.  From Southampton you can easily get to the New Forest which is beautiful.

And actually if you have time I would reccomend coming to Portsmouth.  Here in Portsmouth you can go shopping at Gunwharf Quays or just try on of the restaurants. There's the D-Day museum and you can also visit the dockyard that has HMS Victory & HMS Warrior.

Depending on when you're here I can possibly meet you for a coffee or a drink.

You can actually walk up inside of it.  It can be quite scary, but the views at the top are so worth it.  I SO enjoyed it - oh and I didn't know I was going to, so I was wearing platform shoes when I went (it was about 8 years ago)...

I don't think you can do that anymore.. I was there last year and you weren't able.

Maybe it's changed since then.

I didn't think there was a lot to do in Southampton besides shop.  I've been over to West Quay and spent a ton of $$ on a pair of fabulous Ted Baker shoes my last visit.  I think I need to stay away from there.  BF is already worried on the amount of wardrobes he has to get for all my shoes.

Spoke to bf last night and he suggested I spend a day in Winchester also. I love Jane Austen so I think that will be VERY interesting.  Is Winchester somewhere you could spend a whole day?

We are going into the New Forest on Saturday and other than that I have no other plans.  Trying to make myself busy...bf's answer was to spend my free time at the gym?  That's fine for an hour or two each day, but what else does he want me to do - he suggested ironing?!  I told him NOT even when we are married!

Maureen - I'll be in town the March 17th-25th.  I'll be on my own March 21st-24th.  I'd love to meet for a coffee if you are free.
Thanks for all your suggestions!!

just a corrective note--  the following part was attributed  above to me, but I didn't write it, newyork newyork did:

"You can actually walk up inside of it.  It can be quite scary, but the views at the top are so worth it.  I SO enjoyed it - oh and I didn't know I was going to, so I was wearing platform shoes when I went (it was about 8 years ago)..."

I've never been--not tried to go--into the spire.  As I understand, I think that is now something one has to have special permission for or something, some special arrangement.

And, actually, I agree with your bf-- a day in Winchester would be better.  Though I live in Salisbury, I actually prefer the cathedral in Winchester!  LOL  That's partly due to the fact that Winchester has connections to the poet John Keats:  he stayed there for a time, was there inspired to write his Ode to Autumn...and used to take a daily walk through town and along a path through the watermeadows.  That path still exists.   But also, he used to walk along the aisles of the cathedral (during a service, no less!  he was not religious), reading letters he'd received from his great love Fanny Brawne.

But yes, there is also the Austen connection--she lived there for a time--the house where she lived still exists but is privately owned, so not open to the public.  She is buried in the cathedral and there is a touching memorial plaque to her there.

I can highly recommend a trip to Lymington on the coast - take the train from S/hampton and change at Brockenhurst - lovely 35 minute train ride thru the New Forest - £7.90 round trip - Lymington is an old harbour town -good cafes, pubs, great views etc ....

The train terminates at the harbour, from where you can take a 35 minute ferry ride to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.  See www.wightlink.co.uk for details and ideas of what to do and see on the island - it's a very pleasant place to visit (if a little sleepy!!).

You could also get the ferry direct (see www.redfunnel.co.uk) from Southampton to Cowes on the Isle of Wight - that's a good trip and Cowes is a fun town to visit.

Have fun!

Mekaw,

I can possibly meet you on the 24th either in Southampton or if you want to we can meet in Portsmouth.   It's up to you.  The only problem is my husband is due home around that time (I've not seen him in about 2 months well I saw him for 4 hours on like the 20th of Feb but that doesn't really count).  If he's due home that day I might not be able to meet you. But I should know by the weekend what the deal is with that.  I have to work that day so I don't know if the afternoon(ish) is okay for you.

If you PM me your email address (I'm not sure you'll have access to email) I'll email you my contact info.

Maureen

PS: I think you could probably spend a full day in Winchester
