depends on what you want them for..

Cardboard boxes are more susceptible to insects and damp so for long term storage I'd go for plastic anyday...

DH accidental packed some flour and sugar that he had in a plastic storage container in his moving box.  The rats in the container chewed threw the corner of the box and through the plastic container.  Everything else that came in cardboard was in good condition and the stuff not in a box was very dusty and dirty.  What ever you end up using, if you leave some food in there, nothing is keeping the critters out.

I mean.. I'd be tempted to pack some plastic containers anyways.. for storage once you get here.  You can buy them here, but I still wish I had brought some.

Cardboard boxes are just fine for a ocean shipment.  We used old clothing to pad things we did not want to break and to wrap ou odd things like Red Hot Sauce.  We did pack some more perisible food things (which you are not supposed to do anyways) and thankfully no rats. That's just ... ew....

Hope that helps niku.

I used rubbermaid totes, no damage or breakage.  I liked them anyway and tended to use them for storing holiday decoartions, seasonal clothes etc.  Plus they hold up better for re-use I find.  We'll be re-using the ones I used to move to the UK for a move to Coventry soon in fact.

Make sure if you do use plastic, use the more flexible rubbermaid-type and not the clear plastic sort.  I found that the clear ones are more brittle and tend to crack, the rubbermaid-type are more forgiving.
