Getting the dirt on physicians in the UK
« on: December 20, 2003, 05:47:33 PM »
Was just wondering is there another site other than these two I have found

http://www.gmc-uk.org/

http://www.specialistinfo.com/index.php

to get the dirt on physicians/specialists around here.  I wanted to do a complete biographic background my doctor.  I did find him in one of these sites but the information offered was very limited and did nothing for me.  I know the easiest thing would be to ask which i did (but I forgot to write everything down) and don't want to ask again.  I'm planning of showing this information to my doctor back in NY to make sure all certifications and licensing is on the up and up...

Perhaps we have some members here who have friends who are in the medical profession who can help me out.

i know, i know...this is a VERY old thread, but...

I just brought this up to DH last night, but he couldn't help me.  does anyone know if there have been any developments or new website since this was originally posted?

i've searched on NHS for practices in my area and found 5.  but each one of them is a practice and doesn't list the dr.'s that are in the practice.  i'd like to be able to do a bit of homework before i go in so i can either request a specific dr. in that practice (if that's possible) or choose one that's a bit further away from home, but has someone that is more qualified.

anyone have any pointers?

Perhaps the title of this thread is a bit off-putting.  It sounds as though we are expecting bad stuff!
Sorry, I can't answer your question.  But I would like to know the answer.
I am waiting for surgery on my shoulder.  I would love to know more about the doctor I am with before he actually cuts into me!
I don't know anyone who works at the hospital or is in the health profession down here.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to check?

ok....the closest i can get to finding anything is by going to the NHS website (http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/localisation/), clicking on "find local doctors", putting in my postal code, then clicking find.  once the local practices come up, you can click on each one to get their opening times, location, etc., then on the far right there is a "staff" link.  if you click on that, it will give you all the names of the Dr.'s in the practice and lists their qualifications.

example:

DR STEPHEN BROOKE
Male
Qualifications: MA;MBBS;DA;DRCOG;DCH

so i guess from there i could look up what each of those of those qualifications means.  but it stil doesn't tell me what the dr.'s is like (age, continuing education, personality, etc.).   i know that those things aren't exactly a necessity to know when seeing a Dr., but it tells alot about a person.  i don't want to go to a Dr. and have him make me feel like i'm just "another patient".  i want the Dr. to genuinely be concerned about my health and make decisions on whats best for me...not the cheapest, easiest, fastest route.

You have to ask around - ask your neighbours - it's a good way of getting to know people!

You will probably find that you have little choice about which practice you have to go to, so will only be able to choose doctors within the practice...and you might not even be able to do that.

I have to say that going to your neighbours to ask what the local doctor is like is a terribly un-British thing to do.  Expect funny looks and one word responses ("s'ok")...

Honestly, I have seen four different drs. here in the UK and apart frm one (who I later learned had been having some serious marital problems) they have all been great.

I am sure you could ask the person you are assigned to within the practice.  Or the receptionist....but it may appear you are being a bit presumptuous.

Really the best thing to do is ask around. We finally changed doctors and the difference is night and day. I am so much happier now with our new doctor and his practice. I found him by asking around at my daughter's school, where he came highly recommended, and now I see why. That combined with the research you're doing should give you a good idea of where to land.
