bringing the rings to the UK
« on: March 14, 2006, 03:01:29 AM »
I am coming to see my sweetheart in the UK on the 30th.  Barring some disastrous something happpening, we will become officially engaged while I'm there.  We are unofficially engaged right now.  The unusual thing is that after looking around for a while, we found the ring set we want here in the US.  I plan on bringing them with me, handing them over, and letting him find the perfect moment.

I'm nervous though b/c of recent articles about people not being allowed in b/c of journal entries that showed an intent to marry.  We won't be married until this fall and it will be in the US after which I plan on coming on a spousal visa.  I will be returning here during our engagement--which I'm fairly sad about.  Do you think that my return ticket will be enough to show I'm not staying if officials notice my rings?  I don't dare check them.  I will have to carry them with me.  I can just see me planning this perfect trip and two weeks with him only to be turned away at the airport.  I want to believe I'd be fine, but there is so much to plan between two countries that it doesn't feel like too much of a stretch to begin imagining everything going wrong.  Know what I mean?  I was actually thinking about bringing a journal that has entries describing our engagement and plans for me to return to the US.

What do you all think?  By the way, I think this website is going to save my life over the next year or two!!  I am so happy I found it!

I would just carry them in my purse (ummm...female, right?) or tuck them into my wallet. I've gone back and forth dozens of times (well, maybe two dozen round trips) and in all that time, I've only had my purse searched once. And that was on my very first trip from the UK back to the US. It was all very perfunctory, too.

I've never had a hard time going in either direction. Sometimes, I think they stop you and ask you questions just to see if you get rattled. Don't get rattled, be unfailingly polite, and they'll believe you, even if they run across the rings.

I wouldn't worry about it.  I'd either wear them on my right hand or keep them in my handbag.  They don't know if they're wedding rings, just regular rings, rings from a previous relationship, or family heirlooms.

i did the same thing with our wedding rings when i went to brum in january.

we bought them from dublin & had them shipped to me in chicago to avoid the vat. i took them over so we could get them properly sized; had all the paperwork & receipts, but i was never searched, so it was easy peasy :)

I was just in the UK in January and I had both wedding rings and engagment rings in my carry on bag and told the IO that I was there to meet my finacee's parents and didn't have one problem.
