Yet another car insurance ?
« on: April 04, 2006, 12:22:12 PM »
Ok, we've come to where I need to be insured now to make it much easier on us, however, when trying to add me as a 3rd driver to my stb in-laws policy the rate was through the roof and they would have lost their no-claims discount which was considerable.

I've seen 4 names come up after searching, Norwich Union, Direct Line, Asda and Zurich. Im 25 never had a claim on myself or any tickets, accidents etc in the US, been driving 9 years and my license is in the US.

Could anyone tell me who has the cheapest rates of those four? I have 10 days as a temp driver left on the insurance through my df's parents, so we have a bit of time to sort it out but Id like to get some feelers out there since so many of you have been through this.

Hi Katrina

Its 'impossible' to say which company is cheapest as the individual case is looked at, the best thing to do is ring round (time consuming) for the best deal. However Direct Line has recently launched a policy where named drivers can build up no claims and stay separate from the main policy holders in terms of driving records. Give them a call and see what they say and how much it'll be high(ish) but those benefits may be worth it in the long run.

Also try smaller companies and insurance brokers - sometimes they can come up with a great deal! (Its happened to me few times!!)

Cheers & good luck !

A company I've found surprisingly reasonable is the RAC,you can call them free on 0800 051 4544.

Before i got my UK driving licence, Norwich Union was the only one who would insure me (out of about 5 other places i phoned) with a US licence.  I had to have a provisional UK licence, though... i dont think anyone will insure you without that.

Presumably this is for you to drive their car(s)?      You might find it cheaper to take out your own policy on a vehicle which is in a lower category, then you'd be insured to drive their cars under the "any other vehicles" clause.

Absolutely! Try an insurance broker!! I'm only a little biased in recommending brokers (my BF is one). When I first moved here I went through a broker and he found so many deals for me with my US license that I'd never be able to find on my own. FYI: brokers don't charge the customer a fee, so it won't cost you any more to do it that way.

I was able to be insured with only a US license (not even a provisional UK one). I can't remember what insurance I had the first time around -- my broker switches from year to year depending on who'll offer the best rate. It may have been Zurich? I know it wasn't Norwich because, as every self-respecting broker will tell you, they're the devil! ;)
