moving back to the US for school?
« on: April 05, 2006, 04:46:31 PM »
hey!

my lovely DF has been looking at pursuing his masters/doctorate (??) in forensic psychology, and a bit less into the same thing with criminology.  Apparently, there is a school in NYC (John Jay College of Criminal Justice) that is THE school to go to for Forensic Psych/Criminology, and DF seems to qualify (checking) for entrance, and the fees aren't outrageous (that was the biggest shock!)

I'm planning on moving to the UK this June, but if this will cause loads of problems for his eventual move to NYC, there is the option of me staying in NYC and establishing in-state residency while he works his year away in the UK preparing to move.

To add a twist, he's also a canadian citizen. I would assume that since he'd be going to the US, he could look into the aplication process for Canadian citizens (he can get a passport with a phone call and a few forms, has the card to say he's a full citizen due to his Mum being Canadian) - would this be possible? It's not to get me to the UK, but to get him to the US I would think it might be (hopefully?!)

ALSO - I know that people have established residency in different states for tax reasons, if this happens I would be looking to establish residency in NY to prepare for our eventual return (I currently live in NC) - any idea how people go about doing this?

AND - to add another twist, we could spend 2 years in the UK just to get me ILR, (June 2008) and then go back to the US in time for him to start school in the fall (August 2008) and wait 2 years instead of one, would this solve a lot of issues people are having?

I'd LOVE to live in NYC, the DF loves it, and if this school (which is the best from what i've heard) will accept him and we can afford it, then I would be super-duper excited about relocating while he finishes up his studies - great for my career while it's great for his as well (and we've got loads of friends there).

Any advice is appreciated, I know this may not be under the usual remit of collective knowledge, but aannyyy help is accepted and very muchly appreciated :)

Thanks!
Katie Mo

I don't know about your other questions, but the process to get into the US is the same no matter what country your coming from.  Canadians have to file the same forms and get a green card just like everyone else.  Since he's in the UK, you'll want to file through there.    I think he would have to be a Canadian resident to file there anyways.
Dream a dream of England .......... Some day

I don't know much about the process, but I do know people who have gone to John Jay and it's a great school, excellent location. (Right near Lincoln Center, gorgeous area, and I used to work there ;D)  If you need any more info about where to live etc PM me :)
