Accountants rule!
« on: April 10, 2006, 03:26:20 PM »
I say this before knowing if i owe the US or not.  But my accountant figured out that the UK had held back about £1200 extra for emergency tax my first year here!  So even paying my accountant's fees, i still profit about £450.00 from getting him to do my taxes!

That was very exciting.  Go accountants....and people, check with the Inland Revenue if they witheld the emergency tax! i never did, i thought it wasn't going to be alot!!!!

Wow - shouldn't your employer have done that for you?  My employer refunded it back to me just a few months ago after I got the correct code....Well at least you're getting it back!

Wow, that's excellent news, Amy! I got a few hundred back a few months ago - Inland Revenue sent me a letter saying they thought I had paid too much last year, I filled out the form they enclosed, and a couple of months later a cheque appeared! SUCH a nice treat when that happens!

Amiloo -

I am not 100% certain from what you have said that you have actually lost the entire tax-break for 2005 by not having your pay deposited offshore.

If you want to send me a private message, I'd be glad to discuss this with you...there are a few things in my mind that may just work in your favour...

 ;)

I agree with guya, you should not have lost the tax break for 2005 by having your pay depsoited in the UK.  I got back a big refund from Inland Revenue in 2005 and had my pay deposited in the UK.

Hi there, this "emergency tax"- would they hit a UK citizen (who has just started working in England for the first time)? Or is it more geared toward people who are on work visas etc.?

Thanks

Emergency tax is easy to spot if you have a letter "X" at the end of your tax code.  Alternatively just ask your employer.  It affects everyone.
