Ibuprofen & Bloody Noses?

Does anyone know if taking the ibuprofen can cause you to have bloody noses?  I've been wondering about this since last month.  Every month, I usually have a 1-2 week bout of PMS and painful cramps -- my good old standby for the longest time has been the 800 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours (I do take it less frequently if I am feeling better) to get me through that.  Last month, after I'd been taking it on & off for about a week -- I got 2-3 bloody noses within 2-3 days.  One time I just sneezed (on the tube in London!) and it started gushing - that was fun.   Another time I felt my nose start to suddenly run.  Well I've not had any bloody noses again since I stopped taking the medicine.  It's really going to suck if I have to stop using it.  (Maybe it was just the polluted air in London?  I got that black nose stuff when I was there.)

Ibuprofen, like aspirin, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.  It can interfere with the bloods ability to clot and thins the blood.  Aspirin is also a NSAID  and is prescribed daily for people as a blood thinner.  That's not saying that it was definitely the cause of your nosebleed however.  Here is some info on Ibuprofen:

Thanks Nicole.  It was the only thing I could readily link to the bloody noses & they stopped happening when I stopped taking it again.  I'm due for a checkup soon-ish for my bp meds check -- wondering if they'll ever get adjusted to less or none...as I've lost a lot of weight in the past two years.  I've gotten bloody noses before when the air was really dry, but it's hardly ever like that here.

That happened to me when I was taking Excedrin Migraine. I was getting really bad headaches that nothing was helping. I bought some Excedrin Migraine and it did the trick. So I was taking it fairly often and then started getting horrible nose bleeds. Like two or three a day that would sometimes last for 30 minutes. I went to the doctor because with the combination of these really bad headaches and nose bleeds I thought there was something major wrong! Turns out, it was the Excedrin Migraine causing the nose bleeds. I felt a bit silly. LOL

Some bp meds can thin the blood.  My dad takes some to control his bp and has been warned not to take anything else that might further thin it - like asprin or ibu. 

My husband has clotting problems and was told NOT to take ibuprofen or aspirin, but Alvadon is okay, if you can get it there.

Yes, I know this can be true.  I can't remember (offhand) the name of my bp stuff, but I was taking the same in the States & US doc prescribed both the bp med & motrin for me - so I think mine is ok.  Maybe unless with my weight loss -- one or the other is working too well now.

I may try this in the future.  Usually, plain paracetamol does absolutely nothing for me.  It's funny 'cause I've really cut back on using ibuprofen since I moved over here -- except the last couple months, the cramps were really bad.

Carolyn, I also suffer from horrible awful think Im dying cramps, my OB/GYN back in SF prescribed Tramadol, which does work.  But I didnt know if I could get that here, hubs bought me some paracetamol w/codeine to try.  Give it a whirl, its cheap too!
