An Iowan living in Ham--how apt!
« on: December 04, 2003, 02:00:05 PM »
Hi!  I just wanted to drop a note and indroduce myself.  I am originally from iowa, and have lived in the UK for three years.  I live in Ham, near Richmond, Surrey, having just moved from Gloucester.  My family thinks it is a riot that I live in Ham, after all Iowa has more hogs than people...

I have a husband and a Basset Hound and cen never seem to decide if I love it or hate it in the UK...

Hi there and Welcome!  It is interesting how ironic life is at times.  Hey look at it this way you could live in on of the piddles or puddles! ;D

Hope to see more of your posts!

I think that Iowa and London are worlds apart. Iowa is farmland and people are so... settled.  Most of the people I grew up with all live in the same town their parents live in and now have children that go to the same school we went to.  Not that they don't travel or go out, but there is a certain contentment and stillness.  No one is ever in a hurry.

London is mad.  People from all over the world in such a relatively small place!  Nothing is still or slow (except the District line anytime I want to get somewhere).  It seems everyone I know here has moved here recently, has family in some distant land or dreams of leaving the UK for warmer climes.

i do love both places, but I often catch myself thinking--how on earth did a little girl from a duck and goose farm in Lisbon, Iowa end up in London?  A miracle to be sure!

thanks for the warm welcome.

I agree 100% about London, and like you I did feel the same while living there, but I was like how did a Kentucky girl end up in a place like London! ;D LOL

England in many places are like the countryside of some places in the US.Very beautiful and peaceful, and the history is truly amazing to me!

         UK bound soon  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Welcome Kat.  If you've been reading the posts you will notice lots of people feel as you do.  I'm sure some of them come from other large cities and are now in London so it must have been strange at the least for you moving from farm country.  For me I'm moving to Wales, and even though the city I'm going to is the 2nd largest in Wales it's about half the size (people wise) of the city I'm coming from.  So I'm going to a slower pace.  Which I can't wait for.  Have you adjusted to the faster pace?  I should think getting the rhythm right would be a challenge but once you do, you'll be feeling fine.

Welcome again to the site.  Its good to have you here.

I think I have adjusted well to the pace--though I try not to be one of those maniac power walkers who yell at people for not walking down the street correctly (I have slipped up a few times and caught myself).

Fortunately, I did not go straight from Iowa to London, as I don't think I could have handled the transition and all the poeple!!  I lived in the Former East Germany and India first which left me with 2 lessons--there could be longer queues than the ones at Asda and the oublic transport system here is fantastic--good things to have when living here!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Not from Iowa, but my ex was! lol....but I came from a small town and moving to Hampshire/Surrey border was a nice compromise tho. Smallish town, but only 30 minutes to Reading or Guildford and only 45 minutes to London by train....I think, all in all, it was a good compromise for me.

Welcome!!!!!!

From your 'southern' neighbor (in more ways than one..lol)

Hi ya, Kat.  My welcome is late too, but hello anyway!  :)

I can really relate to your feelings about London and living here.  I too came from a small southern town....farm life was and still is the way of the world back home.  We didn't have ducks and geese, but a rather lot of horses.  The pace of life here is *still* something I struggle with daily...even after nearly 3 years.  But it is an adventure and it does make life exciting!

Anyway, nice to have you here and hope to talk to you more soon!  :)
