spousal visa and then...?
« on: April 20, 2006, 10:04:31 AM »
Hello all,

Firstly, I just want to say thanks for the advice I got before my move to the UK.  As all of you know, the combination of marriage, moving and then all the immigration details are stressful, to say the least.

So, now I'm in the UK on my spousal visa (big sigh of relief), good until 10/07.  What it my next step?  Is it ILR or FLR?  When do I apply?  How long are they valid?  How long does it take before you can apply for UK citizenship?  I've looked on the IND site, but the forms don't tell you what order you need to apply in, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks!
Jenn

First it's FLR. That'll last you 2 years. Then it's ILR. That'll last you... indefinitely.   ;) Three years to citizenship but you have to have ILR first.

just to add on to anne's post- your spousal visa is equivalent to FLR so you don't have to worry about applying for that.  You can go straight for ILR when your two years are up. :)
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

yep that is exactly what I did! Now I just have to wait a year to apply for citizenship!  :)

thanks so much for the replies.  Kind of takes a load off knowing I only have to do ILR -- of course I'll get stressed about that too  ;) but still, it's better than doing it twice.
