FLR to ILR question
« on: April 08, 2006, 09:56:01 PM »
i'm a ways away from my 28-day window to apply for ILR...but i've been thinking ahead a bit and have a question....

once i am granted ILR, that gives me rights to remain in the UK with no restrictions.  i understand that...but i'm curious if that is just the UK, or does that include EU countries as well?  if i would like to move to say, france, am i free to do that with my ILR?  or do i only have access to live/work in the EU once i am a naturalized citizen of the UK (which i believe is one year after i get ILR?)?

Your ILR is issued by the British government and applies to Great Britain only.

Sorry for being thick, but I really am confused here. I received my ILR last year (august) and was under the impression that the minimum amount of time between receiving ILR and applying for British citizenship was a year? No? I've been in the UK for over five years, married three - does that mean I can apply now instead of waiting until August?
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

If you have clocked up 3 years and you are married to a brit, and you have have ILR on the day you apply then you are good to go.

Based upon what you've written, you qualified last August, the day after you received ILR.

That's good news for you Twisted!  :)

Since we live close by, just to let you know the closest places to take the Citizenship test are Newbury and Slough. I am going to the Newbury office in May since its a 5 min walk from the train station. Not sure about the train/walking distance in Slough, it didn't say it was within walking distance but if that would be better for you, then give them a call to see. Not sure where you work, but maybe there is somewhere near there was well for you.

Keep us posted!

Hey, yeah! No kidding! I work on Basingstoke Rd so nowhere close to Slough, but live just down the A4 from Newbury and I know someone who's been to that centre. I'll give them a call on tuesday. Cool! have you looked through the book, yet, Jules? The person I know who's already taken the test was in and out of the centre within about fifteen minutes - five minutes flat for the test. Apparently the Mayor of Newbury awards the certificates - and the one she was in sounded like a total *bleep*-up. Funny as hell!! Hope I get something like that! :D

Michelle, the test is given in Newbury on Mondays and Fridays. I opted for the Monday one.....figured best to get a break from the office on a dreaded Monday.... ;)

I bought the book a couple of weeks ago (WH Smith) and the test is on chapters 2-4....very basic stuff, actually you will be surprised at how much you will already know!

I have skimmed through the rest of the book and its interesting stuff (a bit deeper)...I will probably read it all even though its not required for the test.
