anyone changed SS Card recently?
« on: April 27, 2006, 09:18:15 AM »
Has anyone recently applied for a new Social Security card for name change due to marriage?  Did you make an appointment or walk in?  If you walked in, what day of the week and around what time did you go? How busy was it?  Whereabouts in the month was it?  I'm thinking of just going to the Embassy without an appointment say on a Wednesday later this month, to get there first thing when they open.

well, for me, I walked into the office to do it but it really wasn't necessary. They just gave me the form to take home, fill out, attach a copy of marriage certificate and mail.  They then mailed me my new SS card.

Hmm, so all you had to do was fill out the form (which you can download anyway) and mail it with the marriage certificate?  What address did you have to mail it to?

I'm needing to go into London anyway, as I'm going to get passport pictures done at the same time.  But if I don't actually need to go into the Embassy then that's cool.

I changed mine the last time I was in the US - just went to the local office without an appointment and was in and out pretty quickly.... But if you're in a hurry and not going for a visit I guess London it is....

Are you talking about doing it here or in the US? As for me, I did it in the US. Surprisingly, it took all of about 10 minutes. I didn't have to mail anything in. I filled out the forms there, and just showed the guy my marriage license and they mailed me the card a couple of weeks later.

That's a bit silly that they wouldn't take care of it when you were there in person.  You could've just downloaded the application from home and sent it in with your marriage certificate.  I thought the reason they allow walk-ins was so that you didn't have to part with your original marriage certificate.

I did mine all by mail.  I got my marriage certificate back from the Embassy within 5 days.  Then my new SS card came from the US within 3 weeks, I believe.

It didn't actually bother me too much as the office was just down the street.

I'd be doing it from here, no planned visits for a while.

Hey I just noticed on the SS website you can bring it or mail it to your local office.  Wonder when they changed that?  When i went back to my maiden name in 2004 I had to go in person.

What address did you mail it to StuzMrs?  Was it:

Federal Benefits Unit
American Embassy
24/31 Grosvenor Square
London W1A 2LQ

That's what they give on the SS website
