Sell US PowerBook here or there?

Hi all,

New member here, very likely facing a move to the UK by end of the summer. I have a PowerBook that I could sell prior to leaving or after I arrive in the UK (an upgrade is in order). Would I have any luck selling it on eBay's UK site considering it was bought for the US market? I just don't know if that sort of thing matters much.

Sell it before you leave.  It's one less thing to pack and you'll have more luck selling it without having to explain the power lead stuff.

I wouldn't sell it in the UK.  They'll have to get special cords to convert it to their power system over here.  Probably more hassle then most people want to take on.

Yep... My PB is already on eBay and a new MacBook is ordered! A cheap UK plug converter and I'm set.

Just a couple of points for everyone to consider selling a computer before moving then buying a new one here.

1)  UK keyboards are different than US keyboards.  If you type a lot this might be a problem for you. 
2)  Almost all computers will operate on both US and UK voltage.  Some desktop machines have a small switch on the back of them that you need to change, some are automatic.  Laptops don't because the power pack makes the conversion.
3)  The electric cords or "mains" as they are called here for desktops and monitors  are readily available for a few pounds or you can buy a plug converter.
4)  If you use the DVD player in your computer they are region specific.  Typically with Windows you can change the region up to 3 times after that you can't change the region.  This will be a problem if you buy a new computer here or buy a lot of DVDs here.
5)  Computers are fairly expensive here in the UK compared to US prices when you consider currency conversion.

Bottom line, really there's no need to worry about your computer or sell it and replace it when you get here and if you really want or need a new computer, you may be better off buying before you move.

The "\" key is particularly annoying, as on U.K. PC keyboards it's still located between the left shift key and "Z," with the shift key being narrower than on the U.S. version.

Almost all of the current units will accept 120 or 240V, but there are some laptop supplies which won't.  Just be careful and check the specifications on the label.  The power units for peripherals such as printers, scanners, and so on are often single-voltage only, however.
