What are these vents in my kitchen for....I'm freezing!!

It's a Nighthawk by Kidde that we had picked up in the states but had never opened.  I think I picked it up at Wal-mart.  It's both a fire and CO2 alarm.  I think at the time we probably paid $.20-25
