Older Cats Moving to UK?

We have two older cats, one is 16 the other is 13. I wonder if anyone has moved cats of this age and if there were any problems? I believe they are both in pretty good health as they are both indoor cats. The 16yo has lost a lot of weight recently but she is still spry. We are planning on moving to Notts in the beggining of the New Year and are weighing the option of taking the kitties. So we need to start now if we do...I have had them since they were kittens and it will be really hard to leave them behind, but I hate to put them through all the stress of flying, only to find them sick or dying on the other end due to them being older cats? I know we will find accomodation that will allow them in (family friend owns houses), but my real concern is the cost that we will endure and the outcome of my seniors... We are flying from CA and it is an 11 hour journey... plus the 2 hours prior and possilble 1-2 hours after we land....
Does anyone have any information that relates to our situation that will help us decide on whether to put them through the stress or should we find them a nice reitrement home???

I'd say go for it.  My cat moved from Canada to Japan at 15, then from Japan to London at 20. 

Have your 16 y/o checked out for thyroid/kidney problems, etc.   Weight loss is a possible symptom of hyperthyroidism.  My cat has it, and so far the treatment isn't too bad... but vets charge a LOAD here.  A blood test cost me 200 pounds last week... and the drugs are 40 pounds/week.  I would still have brought her here if I had known about the problem, but it would have been much cheaper...

Weight loss could also be a symptom of diabetes.

I suppose I should leave it up to the vet to find out whether she will be able to stand the flight etc. I will have her checked out to see if what you say ab out weight loss is what is going on. Thanks for the posts.

I agree, see what your vet thinks, especially as within 14 days of travel you'll have to get a health cert signed.  I just brought my 10 year old kitty with a history of kidney failure and who is 20 lbs. I was quite anxious about if he would make it, but he did just fine. In fact he bounced back from traveling within hours and is so happy here. I used an animal transport company and so during the hours before flying we got to wait with him comfortably. And then when the airline called for him to be delivered to them we said good-bye and felt we were in very good hands. The name of the company is Worldwide animal Transport (they have a website). 

This is an encouraging thread...thanks for starting it! I'm planning on bringing my 12 and 13 year old cats back to the UK after Christmas. I'm so nervous about it, but it's encouraging to hear other people have done it and their cats were okay! Thanks!
