Hi,
I am sure a bunch of you have temped to pay the bills while looking for permanent work. Tax-wise, what happens when you are getting money taken out on a Temporary National Insurance number? Does the Temp agency take care of taking taxes out for you, or do you have to file as self-employed at the end of the fiscal year?

The two firms I took work for did in fact take out the taxes for me.  I also had my *real* NI number before I started working for anyone, so I didn't have to worry about "emergency taxes."  I would assume that, even though you are techincally considered self-employed whilst temping, as far as taxes are concerned if they take them out you're cool.

Actually, you wouldn't be considered as self employed as technically you have a contract with the temping firm, so you work for them, which is why they handle the taxes for you.

Yeah - but it's still considered self-employment because you control when/where/how you work, not the temp agency.

The temp agency I worked for took my taxes out before I had my permanent NI number. No problems. When I got my real one, I gave it to them, they said thanks, and that was it.  :D

I hate sounding like I'm being confrontational, but you are not considered self employed if you work for a temp agency. You have a contract with the temp agency to work under them and they contract you out to other companies, therefore you're considered an employee of the agency. It's true, you pick where and when you work according to where and when you're needed, just like a permenant job.
