renting a car in the US
« on: May 21, 2006, 03:27:42 PM »
When we go back home, Jamie and I are going to rent a car. He has a valid UK driving licence (the one with his photo on it). Does he need to get anything in roder to drive? Also, would having my provisional UK licence make a difference for me? We're going to rent under his name, since he's older than I am. I know we need a credit card, which we'll have.

If I'm not mistaken, he can drive with a valid UK licence, but you will not be able to with a provisional licence (its like a driver's permit, so they won't take it).  Most (if not all) car rental places require the renter to be 25 years old as well.
I'd call a couple of places to see what their requirements are.  Hertz, Budget, Enterprise (which I'm using right now as I sold my car and am moving in a few days), etc...

Good luck :)

I'm not bothered about driving myself, I just refuse to rely on my family to drive us everywhere. We're going to want to go places by ourselves which is really hard if you can't get there! Jamie's over 25, so he'll be fine. :)

I know the feeling!! I sold my car on Friday and got a rental on Saturday, because I just KNEW that I'd get crap from my family about driving me places.
Its a wonderful feeling to be able to go where you want to, when you want to!  :)

i'm not sure but he may have to bring both his photocard licence & his paper counterpart.  better safe than sorry...

i've been here in the UK since August of 05 with my wife.  We were under the impression that her company would provide both of us with a car once we arrived but it turned out that only she got a company car.  So long story short, i've been in the UK for 10 months without a car.  Now that really grinds your gears.  Luckily we live 2 minutes from a little high street where I can do grocery shopping and stuff like that.  But I have thoroughly enjoyed our two trips back to the states when I got to get my Santa Fe out of storage and just drive wherever and whenever I wanted.

you need to take both pieces of his drivers license....or if he will feel better get a international drivers license....it doesnt cost a whole lot..just need a passport photo..as well.......

how old is he some places won't rent to anyone under 21...........or who hasn't had a license for under 2 years...

it is alos better to rent them here in the UK..as most of the places here in the UK includes all the insurance you need...

im going to be renting a car for 1 day when i visit my parents in October... going to be driving from Amarillo to visit a friend in Oklahoma.

Im finding myself mightily tempted to rent something cool, that i'll probably never get a chance to drive again... naybe something like a Corvette, if that's possible!   ;D

That is really good advice.  We got a much better deal going through a UK website.
