rechargeable batteries
« on: June 01, 2006, 08:53:07 PM »
Ok dumb question so forgive me, rechargeable batteries are universal correct? As long as the charger is made to accept the type of battery I am looking to recharge?

Ok,
I know you aren't in the US anymore but I just did this and consquently filled my bedroom with smoke because I thought that same thing...  Best bet stay with the same brand charger and batteries.

Unless you like the really cool smoke effect.

They are universal, to a degree. Just remember, the type of batter is more than just AA or AAA, it's also NiMh (most popular) or NiCd or lithium.  You just have to make sure the charger charges that specific type of battery (NiMh, NiCd, lithium) and then from there the rest is universal in terms of brand, etc.

zeusy99 - is it possible that you bought your charger in the UK and plugged it in in the US? It's just a possibility with the voltage difference that you may have fried it... I know my battery charger works on a voltage of 100-250V so it works fine for me charging my AA batteries either in UK or US.

The problem was I bought a good quality charger and bought cheapo no name
rechargable batteries and they didn't agree.  The smoke was pretty cool though.

There's no differenece between U.S. and U.K. batteries, rechargeable or otherwise, except for the variations in types as already mentioned.

Make sure that the chargeris designed for the type of batteries in question (NiCd, NiMH, etc.) and that it's suitable for 120V power or 240V power as appropriate and you should be fine.

Silly question, but is there a possibility you could have inserted one or more cells the wrong way round?

thanks everyone :) I was thinking that was the case, and I managed to find a store that has the charger and comes with 8 batteries so I think I may just go with that and not have to worry at all.

Unless of course rechargeables are a lot cheaper in the US :P

Also what does the mAh rating have to do with anything? Can the two types be mixed when they are being used or does it have to all be one or another?

Also what does the mAh rating have to do with anything?

It's means milliampere-hours, and is a measure of how much charge the cell can store.

In the simplest of terms, if you started with a fully charged cell rated at 500mAh, it would be able to supply 500mA of current for 1 hour, or 250mA for 2 hours, or 1 amp (1000mA) for a half hour, and so on.   It's actually a little more complex than that, because the capacity decreases at higher rates of discharge, so in practice cells are normally specified at a certain discharge rate, often 10 hours.

So a 500mAh cell will supply 50mA of current for 10 hours.   At 500mA it would be exhausted in somewhat less than the hour that the mAh figure would suggest, but at, say, 25mA it would last longer than the 20 hours which the figure suggests.

In a nutshell, the bigger the mAh value, the greater the capacity of the cell, and the longer it will last before needing a recharge (but it will also take longer to charge in many cases).

Do you mean mixing, say, NiCd and NiMh cells?  It's not advisable.  The different types have different charge and discharge characteristics, so you should stick to one type for each piece of equipment.  It's best to keep the same mAh rating for each cell in the pack as well, as that insures even charge/discharge of the individual cells

I don't think I inserted it wrong???  I went out and got a good set of rechargable batteries and everything seemed ok.  It might have just been a fluke.

It could well have been.  Maybe a faulty cell or batch of cells.
