American notary?

I am about to sell property in the US and need to have some papers notarized.

Are there any American notaries in the UK?

If not, do you think a British notary will suffice?

Are notaries here basically the same as in the US?

The only way you can get something notarized by an American in the UK is at a US Embassy.  I forget exactly what the fee is at the one in London, but I believe it's something like $30 for the first document and $20 for each additional document.  It wasn't cheap when I went at the end of last year!

I was hoping to find an American who was living here who still has his/her notary stamp, etc.

If I have to use the Embassy, wondering if you remember -- do you just show up or do you make an appointment?  Also, is it a long wait?  (I'm not in London -- live in Oxford -- so it's a bit of a trip down.)

The link that StuzMrs gave is a good one for information.  I did make an appointment, but my fiance works at the Embassy so he made it with someone he knew. 

As for hoping to find an American with their stamps...it's not legal to do it that way.  I used to be a notary in DC and Virginia (for my job) and I had to be in VA to use my VA seal and in DC to use my DC one.  So where ever you are commissioned is the only place you are allowed to notarize things.
