Registering at the US Embassy...try this again
« on: July 03, 2006, 02:18:23 PM »
First of all, I apologize my computer froze while I was trying to post the first time. It sent a blank field instead of my questions. So on to my questions:

Now that we have arrived in the UK do we need to register at the US Embassy as Americans living aboard? If so what are the advantages of doing so? How do we do it? Do we need to make an appointment or just show up?

Thanks for your patience.

Nah you don't need to register with the embassy, it's not a requirement.

A little story....

A friend of mine was applying for a work permit from within the UK.  When the package arrived at the Home Office, it had been ripped open and her passport was missing.  Panic all round, until a nice call came from the US Embassy..."Miss x, we have your passport".  Someone had found it, and posted it to the Embassy, and because she had registered they were able to contact her to get it back to her.

You can do it right online.  Check here:  https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/home.asp

Thanks...especially for the link. I think I'll register if it is that simple.  ;D
