« on: July 09, 2006, 09:26:55 PM »
Hi guys..we are planning a trip to Germany and wanted to know where to get best exchange rate ££ for Euro's is ?
Should we do it here in London or wait till we get to Germany.

Also, i read somewhere online today that the best exchange rates from within the UK is at Marks & Spencers..has anyone tried exchanging there ?

Thanks in advance

I exchange at M&S all the time.  The rates are ok, but what is really good is that they do not charge any fees.  So long as you aren't converting thousands of ££ you should be fine at M&S.  Just remember to bring your passport with when you go, they will not exchange without.

Hey Karin...thanks for that speedy gonzalo.

So you never considerd exchanging at the destination country eh ?

I am guessing it wont make any difference if we do it here or Germany...but thought i would post my Q. just incase the many seasoned travellers on this site might think otherwise.

I will second M&S for money exchange or just using an ATM card when you arrive. I have exchanged money the "old fashioned" way but it is not always convenient.

Olive Oyl -

thanks for responding..

Would the actual exchange rate be the same if one transferd money here or in Germany in our case ?

I realize M & S does not charge service fee which is excellent...but was wondering if the actual exchange rate would vary up or down.

Yup M&S doesn't charge, and if its more then £500 they deliver it to your door ( I work for  M&S travel,so I have to say this about 20 times a day lol)
The exchange rate would be the same in all countrys. It does change on a almost regular basis though so its best to check here http://www.xe.com/ucc/ to see what it is that day

Although xe.com has the current exchange rates it is unlikely that you will get that rate at M&S or any bank. I am not sure what the currency exchanges base their rates on but I assume they build in some type of commision into the rate.

Yep, I use M&S all the time. Probably pretty much on a monthly basis.  I am usually only converting about £100 or less each time I do it.  Better rates than the post office and no fees charged! (as everyone else has said)  If I am doing a cash transaction they never require any ID. Just fill out a small form with name and address!  Best I have found.
