Family Planning Clinics???
« on: July 06, 2006, 07:04:14 PM »
OK, I guess there was one thing I wasn't too sure on in coming over here and probably should have checked into it. I just assumed that there was some sort of UK version of Planned Parenthood, someplace where I could get a prescription to the pill.
Any suggestions on where to find a place for a prescription? I am just on the standard visitor visa, not yet even the fiance visa. I am willing to pay, but I have no idea where do start.
Thanks to anyone that can help me out.

I would speak to the primary care trust that covers the area in which you are staying.  They maybe able to give you advice, or they may just redirect you to a family planning clinic in the area

I an not a 100% sure on if they would cover you or not, but it is worth a try

Use www.nhs.uk and pop in the postcode where you are staying and it will tell you who your local PCT is.  I would probably ask to be transferred to the medical department within the PCT.

When you walk into a family planning clinic all they will ask from you is your name and address. They don't want any kind of ID, proof you're a resident, or anything like that.

Whether or not you're supposed to be able to use the clinics if you're not a resident, I have no idea. But you can.

They did ask me what gp practice I was with.

Same here.  We had to complete a questionnaire.  There was one foreign woman in the waiting room who was called up to the desk and asked for proof she was able to use the NHS - as she had stated on her forms that she didn't have a GP practice.

I didn't hear what the outcome was, though, b/c I got called up for my appointment.

So it's not a given that they'll just treat you.

I think in larger cities, they're starting to twig about healthcare tourism.

We recently switched surgeries and I had to show my NHS card for the first time ever.

can your US doctor refill your rx?  you could then refill at an online pharmacy in the US and have it sent here to the UK?

alternatively, you may be able to find a UK private doctor/nurse who can write you a UK rx.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
