Question about  Going Europe ..from Dover to Calais

Question:  Can you just drive to dover and pay the tickets or you have to book in advance with fix time and date?

sorry.....i can't respond in french....

and i don't know the answer to your question (for positive sure anyway) but i'm thinking that not everyone knows in advance that they will be taking the ferry.  if i remember correctly, i think i saw booths to buy tickets on the calais side (i don't recall for the dover side). 

if you do buy them in advance though, i'm pretty sure you can get a better deal than if you buy them the day of travel....

We used to ferry over to France, Dover/Calais, frequently when we lived in England.

A couple of considertions/questions:

What time of year are you planning to travel?  You can drive up and purchase tickets from the ticket office at the terminal.  However, certain times of year are busier than others in which case, you may not be able to get on the next ferry.   

It does no harm to book.  If you arrive early, they will put you on an earlier ferry if space if available.  If you're late, it's not like airlines; they will put you on the next ferry. 

Basically, once you go through the terminal, dock workers point you into a designated lane and you just sit and wait in the queue until they call your line for loading.

Have fun!  I miss the trips to France.

So I should buy the ticket online and wait on line .

In Holland, we are looking for good  Bread called " Brot ", Cheese, Coffee,   frikandel meat sauasage / french fries with mayonaise.

The train is best for the Dover-Calais route. I would rather be on  Le Shuttle than the boat if the weather is bad.

If you're planning on going to Holland, I'll suggest going on Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkerque, it's about a 2 hour sailing time and it's not 'as busy' as say Calais or Boulougne - I went june 2005 to help my mate move back over from Amsterdam, drove right up the the barriers, showed my pre-book and was waived through, I could've purchased right there and it wouldn't have taken more than a few mins - but I side with the suggestions to pre book.

5 mins max in France, then you hit into Belgium, head towards Antwerp, then take the A1 up towards Utrecht.

One element of caution - If you are heading this way watch out for the stupid Utrecht one way system! I thought I was doing ok until I called my mate and he started laughing as I'd taken the Longgggg way round!

I did have my TomTom GPS but as I was fiddling around with another program, my GPS signal kept dropping every 2-3 minutes, had I taken the other direction in the 1 way ring road thing, I would've saved around 23-30 mins !

You are right the price will go down if you dont care for fast route of 2:50 but the sheap route is about 5:30 and  7:00.
