Yes, I've run into the same with Maryland.  Since my domicile is no longer in that state, I am not entitled to hold a Maryland license.  Furthermore, if I continue to renew my license using a Maryland address, I responsible for state tax.

My understanding is that it is illeagle to hold a state license for a state you do not reside in and to hold license in more than one state.  I had first hand experience with this.  You have 30 days once you move to change your license/registration/insurance information.  I got caught when I first moved back from CO.  I had to go to court and pay a $300 fine.

I don't know if this is the case in every state but in NJ, valid Driver's License also puts you into the pool for Jury Duty.

It is illegal to hold more than one state license - but not the case for a state you do not actually reside in - think of servicemen overseas.

I keep my home state license since it keeps me at resident status.  My home state does not have state income tax. I use my mother's address.

This is all very troubling. My Virginia license expired recently and I plan to renew it when I go home. We still own a home in Virginia so I was planning on using that address.  Will I get in trouble? How would DMV know whether or not I reside there? I still pay taxes and other bills in Virginia on that house, and I still hold US credit cards tied to that address.

As for having to pay a fine for for not turning in old plates, that's just odd. I have never turned in old license plates and have never been fined. I've always destroyed them, or in the case of vanity plates, kept them as souvenirs.    My father once turned in his Virginia plates to DC police after his car was destroyed there in a fire; the plates later turned up on a car thief's stolen car (apparently the plates were stolen from a DC police impound lot) and was wracking up parking tickets all over town. The DC and VA police kept coming after my dad to pay hundreds of dollars in parking fines that were not his, and finally had to go to traffic court to straighten out the mess.

I still have my old plates...I've never heard of turning them in???

I also have a VA license, since that's my 'official' permanent address (parents live there), but I haven't LIVED in VA ever...I'm in Texas at the moment, and I drive a VA-registered car with a VA license.  The car is slightly dodgy, because the inspection expired in May, but the car hasn't ever been back in VA since then to get it renewed.  I can't register it in Texas, because I don't have a permenant address here, plus I am not the owner of the car (my parents are).  Same for the license, though it has caused me some hassle!  I've gotten denied buying liquor (and questioned a few other times) twice now for an out-of-state license from some over-zealous clerks, which has been annoying.

From what I understand, as long as you have an address in that state that you can call a permanent address, then you are entitled to a license.  So even if you reside in the UK, if you've got an address somewhere you can use (a house you still own, or maybe your parents), then there shouldn't be a problem.

But not everyone who has a driver's license is eligible to vote (and thus, serve on a jury...)

For the record, I rented it on  my VA license thinking it would be easier since I was in the US and said that I was a us resident when i booked online (thought there might be an extra charge). So that is why I couldn't use the UK one I think.

I think  i'll just leave it be and get one when I move back,  I'm really sick of red tape.
