Long waiting times.. NHS
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:14:34 PM »
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if others are going through the long wait like me.
This is  the timeline so far..

Dec. 05 went to GP with foot injury

Jan 06 had xray taken

back to see GP who referred me to Ortho Consultant ( had to see a practitioner first) and also Physiotherapy

May 06 saw practitioner who referred me to consultant ( I was told it was ligament damage and I would need to have it casted)
meanwhile I was called by physio and asked if I still needed to be seen.... uuugghhh YES! went to physio for 7 weeks

July 06 back  to GP for pain med refill and also ask if I could buy my own foot brace  until I saw the consultant, he said I should wait because it shouldn't be much longer

July 06 received letter for revisit to practitioner (went to see her and was told  the letter was sent by mistake)

Aug.06 had to quit work because I couldn't  keep standing on my foot all day
( during  this time my GP keeps giving me stronger painkillers until I can get something done for it)

Aug.06 my GP calls the consultants office to try to get me in sooner, haven't had a reply yet from him if he was able to ( that was two weeks ago)

now on Aug 9th I called the appointment dept myself and was told that they haven't gotten around to scheduling  appts for May referrals  yet. ..So who knows when I'll be able to see the consultant!!
It's been nine months so far with my foot in pain and I don't see an end in site :(
I know there is a wait  to see a consultant when you go through the NHS but this is looooong. I'm ready to ask how much it would cost to be seen if I pay for it.

Might there be a chance of getting private healthcare insurance in the future for you?

agree with expat... but my UK insurance won't cover any pre-existing conditions.  i think many UK supplemental insurances are similiar.

They should be able to hurry things along if your injury is preventing you from working.   Last year when my husband had a back problem and was waiting for physio the GP wrote  a letter asking for him to be given an urgent appointment because he was off work.  The letter went missing of course so I collected another one from the GP and hand delivered it to the physio clinic at the hospital where I was told there was a 12 week wait even for a urgent case so I asked for the name and contact details of the head of department.  When I got home about 20 imnutes later they had already rung and left a message with an appointment time for the following week.
