Composing Bridal wishlists for/Wedding Gifts, US->UK
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:56:08 AM »
Alright...here is the story.

My fiance and I will be getting married in July 2007 in the US.
We will be having the wedding and a reception in the states as well as
another reception in the UK.

We plan to settle in the UK.

Okay, so my question is this:
When it comes to registering and making wishlists in the US, should lighter stuff be the main concentration in the US(easier to take over), with more of the electronicy things in the UK for portability?? Or is that a bit unfair to the UK side, with having wishlists based on electronic, kitcheny things, etc etc..?

Any opinions and idea on this are more than welcome!!

THANKS!

Jen

just register for everything in the states..  most people ended up giving me money  for the wedding and gifts  for the showers  so I had  time to  post them to the UK..  also some people may be  helpful enough to send them directly to  whatever address  you put as your  mailing address.  (if you want to put a UK one)  best of luck.. registering is a fun thing to  do.. unless your future DH  is anal about the china  pattern   ::) ::) ??? ;D

I wouldn't register for anything electric in the US if your plans are to settle in the UK.  There are threads on here about adapters and converters and I think about 50% US appliances do not work over here.  I wouldn't risk it.

As for being fair to UK vs US guests....a place setting of china can cost just as much as a kitchen appliance, so I wouldn't worry about it from that perspective.  If you really would prefer just cash, then just create a very small registry of things you really want (in each country) and when that sells out most people will end up giving you money.  I don't think people generally go off the gift lists these days, but you won't be outright requesting cash.  It will just look like they got there too late.

Since most stores in the US do not accept credit cards from people without a US billing address, it would make sense to have a UK gift list at some place like John Lewis, Debenhams, etc for the UK reception.

That's basically what we did. We registered for linens and non-fragile things at Bed Bath and Beyond and Hechts (now Macys). So loads of towels, sheets, and misc bits - some things like a salad spinner that are half the price in the US and light enough to warrent taking over. Then we had a list at John Lewis here - China (I was too worried about shipping it), knives, a few electrics, etc - though most people here got us money or random non-list bits. The US presents are all over now - we took them in our luggage after the wedding, and my parents who came over for our blessing in the UK took the rest.

I stressed SO much over lists. I wanted to do china and glassware, but was too worried about losing it in transit. ANd I was worried about being 'fair', but like I said, we got money and gift cards largely over here. I *did* try to balance - having some linens on our UK list, and kitchen stuff on each list, etc. I was more worried about US guests not being able to buy china/glassware (a tradition in my family), but like I said, no one seemed bothered.

If you want money, tell your parents, who can pass the word around. I found that all my family and parents' friends assumed we wanted money and asked muy parents about it accordingly. But I wanted gifts not money, so I could associate things with people. I'm not sure, five months later, if that matters - although all our wedding presents are now with PILs, so I've not really seen them. I can't wait til we're settled again and can have them!! :)

We had your idea, register in the states and then everyone in the UK can give us gifts (if they wish) for our place (which we don't have yet).

In hindsight though we registered in the States at Target. We only got maybe 3 things off the whole list, and thats from actually TELLING someone to buy a specific thing. Most ppl in the US gave us money (which we requested moreso than gifts since we didn't want to have to ship them).

We're having a UK reception (well a bbq) on the 27th August and people are asking us what type of things we want. I wish we'd set up a gift list in the UK now too because it would cut down on the hassle of telling people what we need/don't need etc etc.

So I'd do two gift list, one in each country, for specific things. Say US: things you can ship over easily and UK: appliances, dishes etc etc

I registered at Amazon.com in the US and debenhams in the UK. My wedding is in the US and we will be residing in the UK. I took breakable stuff with me on the plane back after my shower in teh states. I will be doing the same when we come back after the honeymoon, plus we have several guests from the Uk coming that have agreed to help us take stuff back in their bags to the UK.

I got a ton of gifts from my amazon registry so I imagine my wedding gifts will end up mostly being cash. All electrics were registered in the UK.

Wow!!

You guys are simply wonderful!!

Thanks for all the advice!

I was already thinking about utilizing my fiance's folks when they come here for the US wedding, and prior to the wedding, I will be heading off the UK for the Glastonbury festival(prays to get tickets), so I would take any bridal shower things with me.

Yea..i dont want to be so forward in saying, SHOW ME THE MONEY, or anything, cuz I too like the idea of getting gifts and useful items.  My fiance(i have to get use to calling my boyfriend this still!:-) is visiting next month, so I think then would be a good time to get the wishlists and registering at places in order!!

When finally, all is said and done, we will be living at his family's house until I can get a decent paying job and then jointly, we will apply for a mortgage for a house.  The interest rates keep on going up, so that part is really daunting!!

Even though this is alot of work, the planning, the sorting of the visas(next year), etc...there is some fun with it.  I just feel like Im starting to obsess over it all and that Ive become somewhat one-tracked on the wedding thing.  I dont think its just me. My mom and sister are goggling and googling over it as well... :P
