Best Deals on Airfare for December Holiday travel to US
« on: July 22, 2006, 10:10:51 PM »
So we are lucky that DH's parents have offered to fly us to the US for the Christmas holidays. My question is, not having done this before, is there a time of year to purchase to get the best fare? Currently from London to Dallas/Fort Worth I am seeing fares of £650. Does anyone know if that is a good price? I've not had to price fares back to the US since we moved here so I have no idea.

Thanks!
Stop waiting. Start doing.

Well around Christmas that isn't too bad.  A good price with a major airline from London to a Major US City should be around £350.  A very cheap flight would be around £200.

Don't forget the "normal" tricks for trying to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday (the slow days).  Most of the budget travel have a flexible dates options to help out on this.  The longer you can stay, the cheaper the flight is going to be, because just before Christmas and until mid-week after New Years are just going to be packed.

A quick search from LHR to DTW is showing flights around $600 per person which is about £320.  (That is arriving before Christmas and staying until mid-week the New Year.)

We found our Christmas tickets via the Thomas Cook website for about £320 (Gatwick to RDU, American Airlines, nonstop).  We're going from the 12th through the 28th and those were the cheapest dates....all other December date combos were at least twice that.

I've always found that flights right around x-mas and new years are super expensive.  From London to Boston leaving around 22 Dec and returning around 2 Jan have always been around £600.  So I would say based on that your flights seem in line.  Like Lola and Kitsonk have mentioned if you are flexible with your dates, you may be able to find better deals.

My mom usually comes at Christmas and the trick is to fly on Christmas or Boxing Day and stay till after New Years.  Not exactly Christmas, but close enough.  :)

Last year for Christmas, we were able to fly from London Gatwick to Houston for about $700 (though we went around the 15th since my husband could pretend to work for a week out of his company's Houston office.) So, I would tend to think that you could probably better than £650, depending upon when you are looking to leave.

And, if you still have a US credit card, don't forget to check Expedia US or other American travel sites, as we have found that they sometimes have better rates than their European counterparts.

I looked on klm, airfrance and travelocity.co.uk. It was cheap I can't remember how much it was around 280 pounds then they add the tax.. it went up to like 400

Was it 700 dollars for both of you?  and if so who did you fly with?

I wish. That was per person on Continental. But still not too bad for Christmas time.
