USD $ Money Orders in London
« on: August 16, 2006, 11:18:36 AM »
Just thought I'd post that we were able to get a money order in US$ yesterday in London at the American Express office on Haymarket Street (near Picadilly Circus). I know periodically I need to send something to the US and they want a cashiers/certified check in US$ or a money order and until now I was having to ask friends or family in the US to do this for me and I felt like I was imposing. Now I can be autonomous  ;D and not presume so much on them. Just thought I'd post in case it can help someone else.

TBH - we didn't pay attention to the fees/rate because I am in the position of having to have either a cashiers check from a US bank or a US money order to request some copies of documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) so it wasn't about it being "competitive" for us, more about actually being able to get something here that I thought could only be obtained in the US. I know as Amex card holders sometimes certainf fees are waived for us on some things and I don't know if that came into play (my DH got the MO on his lunch hour). I'm sure the fees are probably outrageous  :-\\\\ but in my situation, I had no other choice because I just cannot ask my MIL to do any more of this for me.

Mainly I thought it might be useful in case anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation where only a money order or US Bank Cashiers check would do, to let people know that it's an option.

I just got a cashiers check from Halifax in US dollars. The fee was £7. It was an $18 check.
