I got a scholarship, yay! :)
« on: August 29, 2006, 10:32:07 PM »
Just received notice in the mail that I've gotten a Vice-Chancellor's scholarship from MMU :)  It's only £500, but that is still a nice chunk of change for a poor student!

Here's the press release:
Quote
SCHOLARSHIPS of up to £1,000 sterling have been awarded to more than 100 of MMU’s outstanding international students.

The Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship Scheme announced awards of either £1,000 or £500 to help 130 students from around the world pursue their studies in Manchester.

In Asia, awards were made to students from Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Pakistan, India, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.

In Africa, students from Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe were rewarded.

In the Americas, scholarships were given to scholars from the USA [that's me! Yay!], Trinidad, Antigua and Jamaica.

In Europe and the Middle East, recipients were from Turkey, Khazakstan and Jordan.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Brooks said: "We make these awards in recognition of the considerable contribution international students make to the life and culture of MMU and to the UK as a whole.

"Students come to us for our strong reputation in teaching and research in their chosen field, for the vibrancy of Manchester and for the attractiveness of the UK as an education destination."

Congrats!!  ;D My SO went to MMU and loved it.  Manchester is a great city for students. Like I said earlier, look me up when you get here.  I'm sure you don't want to hang out w/ an old fogie  :P w/ a baby but if you're ever homesick you can drop by and have a chat and some coffee.  Again congrats on the scholorship!

Do you know where you're going to live yet??  Some parts of Manchester can be a bit dodgy so if you need anything just ask.

That's fantastic news!  £500 is a pretty decent chuck of change.  Especially when someone's just giving it to you for being so smart and foreign.   ;)

Thanks everybody!!  I really wasn't expecting to get it (I actually applied for it at the last minute and faxed the forms over 3 hours before the deadline!) But it was a pleasant surprise and means that I'm not freaking out about money quite so much- every bit *does* help.

Lindyloo- I'll definitely look you up when I'm in Manchester!  I'd totally hang out with you and Esme having a cup of coffee or something.  I'm living almost right next to the uni campus, actually, about a 2 minute (if that) walk from Oxford Road.  I'm very excited :)
