ok, i have a plan...  i was thinking that attending an English school could be my ticket to the U.K.  so, my career of choice happens to be teaching.  What colleges in england are good for obtaining a bachelors in teaching?  And how much money do you think it would be to attend one of these colleges?  thanks

As far as getting your BA here, I can't really say.  I did my BA in the US.  However, I am currently doing my PGCE (UK version of Teacher Certification) and I can tell you that if you are a foreign student, it would have cost you for the academic year 2002-2003, £8995 ($14,302), and that's just for tuition.  Sheffield Hallam has a really good reputation for its teacher training, and you would pay considerably less in the North than you would in the South for accommodation (tuition tends to be a standard across the UK).  Becoming a teacher in the UK actually comes in 2 steps.  First, you do your degree in whatever subject you wish to teach (or combined with Education) and that takes 3 years (4 if you are planning on teaching languages, because you have to do a year abroad).  Then, you do your professional year, which is when you would do your Education module (unless you did this as part of your degree) along with your teaching practice.  Hope this helps.

Let me know what you find out! I want to live in the UK, and go to uni. I'll probably end up majoring in education. I've spent a lot of time already researching it, and talked to several people in England.

You could go ahead and get your teaching degree in the US and then come over here and get your QTS through the overseas trained teacher scheme. That's what I did.

True, but I still have about 3 1/2 years left here! And I'm getting sick off Tennessee.  How hard was it to get a teaching job in the UK? Did you go over on a work or spouse visa or what? What age do you teach?

I understand that in terms of the job market in the EU all employers legally have to exhaust all options from within the EU before appointing people from abroad.

So is it possible to work towards a BA in Education in the UK and then stay on and teach being a US national?

What's the process?  Anyone?

I am obtaining an AA in Sociology but had orig. intended to get into education.  Perhaps I can study education in UK and then become a teacher there?

How difficult is this?

My ideal situation is relocating to UK permanately.  Please help!  :)

it's possible to get a teaching qualification in the UK and then get a work permit as a teacher, definitely.  Since teaching is a shortage profession you'd just need to find a school willing to hire you and it's fairly straightforward from there.  I have a couple of Canadian friends who just moved to the UK after studying to be teachers in Canada- they both got work permits with no problem at all.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

The process is quite simple.  Apply for a PGCE programme.  That's what your teaching certificate is called.  It takes a year to complete, at least it did for the student teachers we had working last year. While you're working on your PGCE, apply for jobs from tes.co.uk (the Times Educational Supplement that comes out every Friday).  When you get a job, your employer applies for your work permit and if you have your FINAL marks from your uni, you can apply to change status from student to FLR(IED).  It's not a difficult process.
Expect to pay out the nose to attend that much uni as an international student.  I paid about $60,000 for my MA (tuition plus living expenses) and that only lasted a year.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
