Mini Break
« on: September 18, 2006, 12:48:54 PM »
My husband and I would really want to go away somewhere this weekend.  I looked into going to Paris via the Eurostar but this late in the game, the prices are just too much.  We are looking to make a little romantic getaway and are not fussed as to where it is as long as it is within easy reach and cozy.  I think at this point, our best bet is to stay in the UK, close(ish) to London.  Can anyone recommend a small town or a maybe a nice B&B, castle hotel, etc withing maybe 3 hours drive of London?  We'd also like to do some sightseen.  TIA

June

Have you been to the Cotswolds?  I love it there...particularly Bourton on the Water...gorgeous.  http://www.bourtoninfo.com/

If you haven't been to Bath yet, it's also a wonderful town to visit.

You can head up my way to Warwickshire and stay at a nice B&B in Stratford Upon Avon. (Shakespeare's birthplace) Stratford is also just ten min from the glorious Warwick Castle. Even though we only live 20 min away, my husband took me to Stratford for the weekend for my birthday. It's a fantastic little getaway!

This is where we stayed. Very cute, very quaint and quiet.
There's a pub at the inn but its very small and quiet so we were able to have a few drinks without the crowds, noise and smoke then walk (stumble)up to our room.

We just got back from a little village in Somerset called Shipham.  It's about 3 miles from Cheddar and 8 miles from Wells and about a 1/2 hour from Glastonbury.  While the rooms at the inn weren't the most romantic they were nice and cozy and the food was some of the best I had in England so far.   Here's the link http://www.penscot.co.uk/ .  I would definitely recommend if you're looking to travel around Cheddar and Glastonbury.

If you're heading to that part of the country, I'd like to recommend a visit to Avebury as well. Fantastic place!

Oh yeah!!! Avebury is great, just make sure you bring some warm clothes. I found out the hard way it can get very cold there!!
