Bank account sans utility bill!!!
« on: September 18, 2006, 10:18:18 AM »
After three weeks of trying to get a bank account, I finally have one!

But here's the story.

Week #1
DH goes to the Co-Op bank with his letter of employment from the Uni, a copy of our rental agreement and subscription confirmation from the electricity provider and his passport. Bank says everything is ok, and all that's needed for our joint account is for me to show up with my passport. I arrive a few days later, and we go to the bank. But now our rental agreement is no good because it's partially hand-written (it's one of those fill-in-the-blanks forms), and the electricity provider confirmation is not good because it has to be a utility bill.

No problem, we call the electricity company and they say they'll send us a bill in three days.
We wait five days, and no electricity bill.

Week #2
We call the electricity provider, and they say they have no record of our request. They can send a bill, but as we have no access to our metre, it will take at least 10 days.
I contact my employer, as HSBC says they take letters of employment as proof of address.

Week #3
I get my letter, and go to HSBC. Now the letter is no good, because it only had my address on top, and said it confirms I work for my company, receive x amount of salary and reside at my address. Of course it would've been helpful if they had pointed out they required an exact wording.

I get my company to send a letter addressed to HSBC manager which says "I confirm x lives at address y".

I go to HSBC, and now they'll only give me an account if I pay £50. (The Passport account).

DH now has proof of address (he never closed his student account, and it's still open!). We go to the Co-Op bank, and would now have enough documentation, except his bank transcript says APARTMENT instead of FLAT, so that is not acceptable for our joint account. We then decide to leave me off, so that he can apply for the account with APARTMENT instead of FLAT in the address. All of my proof of address say flat, of course.

After a few other banks requiring utility bills, I arrive at Abbey.

They are nice, and accepted my documentation without a problem.
I have a basic account opened immediately (cash card, direct debits, standing orders, internet banking) which I can upgrade after three months.

Congrats! Opening a bank account was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had while living here.

Don't get me started on requirements for banks here!  I'm sure they have their reasons though!   ::)  Congrats on finally getting it all taken care of!

I was concerned about this, since I'd heard all of the horror stories regarding setting up a bank account.

However, I walked into HSBC with a letter of intro from the agency that placed me with my employer, my passport/visa, and my lease, and five minutes later I was DONE.
I leave for work at 7:10 each morning, and get home at 6:00 each evening.  Wish I could stay home all day and do nothing but sit around on UKY!  What a life!  And I have no Internet access in my classroom, so I can't just stop teaching and surf UKY.  Can you believe it??  Horrid, my job!

I went to Lloyds TSB and all I needed was a letter from my uni and my passport. They were able to give me a free classic account with no issues. NatWest wasn't able to give me that and I applied for an account from HSBC online and I never heard back. It definitely pays to search around.

What kind of privileges does that give you?  I have the most basic account with NatWest, which includes a Solo card.  I'd like to get something more flexible & widely accepted (ie, Visa or even Maestro), but I'm not eligible for an upgrade as a "mere" in'tl student.

Now the thing is that university students generally get a good deal with banks, with debit cards and chequebooks and what have you. If you're not a student it's not so easy.

For now I only have a cash card and I can do standing orders and direct debit, and have internet banking, but in three months I'll be able to upgrade to at least a debit card & cheques. Fine with me, I don't need those as badly as I need an account to get paid into ;)

My classic account gave me a cheque card, a book of cheques, and a paying in book all at no monthly charge. I went to NatWest first and she told me that all I would get as an international student was a solo cash card and she told me I should search around. Lloyds was the next place I went to and they were really nice. I don't know if it's due to the amount I was depositing (I had a loan check) that made me eligible for the classic account, but it didn't seem that way. I wasn't eligible for the student account because my program is only 1 year. That was fine by me. I'd rather have the classic account anyway.

Can you get the Natwest Mastercard credit card for international students (that's the one I was offered here in Manchester) and just pay it off in full every month?
Now a triple citizen!

Every since you've mentioned it, I've been meaning to go in and check.  It would be really useful, since Solo has caused me angst in the past.  Either that or see if POSSIBLY I'm eligible for an upgrade on my account, since it's been open over 2 years now.  We'll see.

Do you guys know about this: http://www.workgateways.com/working-uk-banking.html#req1

I have heard that many agency, such as 1st Contact, can successfully help you open a bank account, provided that you can produce bank statements from your original country and proof of your legl residency (HSMP, Work Permit), etc.
