The hills of Devon
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:27:33 AM »
We recently returned from a few days in Ilfracombe, Devon. I dont know if anyone is familiar with the little seaside towns of Devon but there are hills upon hills. Really steep hills at that. One night we were driving around just sightseeing and we approached a very steep hill. My husband tried to downshift in the middle of the ascent and we totally lost first gear. Here we were stuck in the middle of this hill. Even with my 24 years of driving experience I couldnt get the car down. I coasted backwards to the curb and had called the RAC. The entire time we could smell the clutch burning and the brakes getting hot. It was really frightening. Beware the hills of Devon!!

Thanks for the warning, and I'm glad you are all okay.  It all sounds very scary.

Glad you are all OK, pebbles!  Yes, the roads in Devon can be more than a little hairy!!!  I think that is why I love living here so much.  The roads here seem very much like the ones I drove on back in the mountains in West Virginia.  :)

Gotta love the Devon hills, but I love my automatic even more!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yet another reason I'm going to give it a bit before getting a license.  I like walking hills, but driving...not so much.  Those hills sure do help make Devon beautiful though.

Glad you made it okay Pebbles.  I would have been freaking out.

Scary! I'm glad everything worked out and you all made it home safely! I hope the rest of your time in Devon was enjoyable.  :)
