Getting Moved for EU Citizens
« on: August 30, 2006, 06:52:57 AM »
This may not be the right section for this, but here goes.  I'm an American, but hold Swedish citizenship as well.  I'm moving to the UK on the 5th of October, looking for work (several great leads so far).  I'm just wondering if there are other EU citizens at this forum who can give me some general information about settling in, who and what I need to register with.  I know about the NIN thing and I know that my Swedish citizenship gives me the right to just up and move to the UK without jumping through the hoops most of you have had to jump through, but I'm sure there's government entities that need to be informed of this change of country as well.  Any other duals out there with experiences to share?

I guess you're here now, then! How are you finding it then? Not an EU, so don't have a clue how that works...just saw nobody had replied so thought I'd see how you're doing. ;)

Thanks for the reply.  I'm back in Sweden at the moment, getting all the last-minute things tied up for the final move.  But the job prospects are very bright and I'm downright impressed by the kind of salaries I've been offered.  Now it's just a question of finding some lodgings for a few months, while I look for a permanent place.

We'd just moved when you posted, completely missed it...

No, no government registration needed. You CAN register with the Home Office if you want, but you don't need to.

All you need is your NI number.

We didn't have much difficulty in getting a flat, only paid one month's deposit as well (with an agency). I would stress the Scandinavia bit when looking, Scandinavia is well known for being 'upscale' with housing, so I suppose landlords are more comfortable renting to Scandis.

Or so it seems.

I think the fact that I'm quite a bit older than many newcomers might help as well (56 years old, gainfully employed, etc.)
