Packed Lunch Ideas?
« on: October 24, 2006, 07:49:19 PM »

I'm running out of ideas for the kids' packed lunches. They don't need something new everyday but I hate to keep putting the same things in over and over again. Plus, Nicholas' school has asked that he not bring peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, so that's one less lunch item on the menu.

So, how do you get around the packed lunch doldrums?
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Sometimes I pack like a ham/cheese and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. I have also packed a cheese stick w/ some veggies & ranch dip, I might put some Jello in there, too. What about some chicken or tuna salad w/ crackers and a dessert?

Sarah even likes cold hot dogs, I would pack one of those with something nutritional to balance it out a little.

Why has the school said no peanut butter sandwiches for heavens sakes?

What about some pitta pockets with a tub of hommous or tarama to dip them into? Would they eat something like that?

Both those ideas sound good - cheers guys! :)

Something to do with children who have nut allergies . . . I can sort of understand but it does cut down on lunch bag items!

Oh I see.  I thought you were going to say it was too unhealthy - I saw something on TV last week about a poor kid who had a fromage frais confiscated by his school because his lunchbox had too many "snacks."

Another idea, if they have access to hot water & a mug, is a cup a soup to go with their sandwiches.

My mom used to empty a tub of yogurt into a small insulated container and freeze it.  It would thaw enough that it was like having frozen yogurt for lunch.  That was always one of my favorites.

Or perhaps some sliced salami/sausage, cheese, and crackers?

I used to love sandwich roll-ups my mom used to make. She would take a piece of bread w/crust cut off, some cream cheese and a little lunch meat and roll it up. YUM!

Our school in San Diego banned peanut butter.   there was always a nut free table for the allergic kids to eat at as well.

My kids eat the same thing over and over again until they get sick of it and then they take something else over and over again.

Nutri-grain bars are the current hit. Baby carrots, apples, cut up veggies, sugar peas.  They have liked bagels and cream cheese in the past.  Currently, they have a bap with sandwich meat and cheese.

Sometimes, I take a vacuum thermos and give them a hot lunch - ravioli, mac&cheese.  Not often though.  They don't like hot lunches.  they like the same old, same old.

I have relented for the first time and allowed them to take twix bars but they're in high school..

As long as the kids have all four food groups represented, I'm not too bothered about what they take.

Also, you can freeze yogurt tubes (can you even get them here?)

Our favorite for school is a hoummous and watercress sandwich.  I've also made egg and cress sandwiches (yes we like our watercress around here  :)  ).
Is it all nut butters or just peanut butter?  There is always almond butter and my favorite, cashew butter..
How about cheese and marmite?  Quorn makes sandwich meat as well.

We have Frubes, which are fromage frais, rather than yoghurt.
I keep mine in the freezer so that it's thawed, but still nice and cold by the time i get to work.
They're good frozen as well.
