Does anyone have experience with NHS Doctor's in the UK writing perscriptions for "off-label" conditions, meaning writing a perscription for a drug that is not yet approved to treat a particular condition?
I was lucky enough to be included in a medical trial here in the US for a drug called "diazoxide" which is used to treat low blood sugar. In the previous study, 20 people used the medication with a diet programme and 18 lost twice as much weight as those that didn't. The problem is that the study was not controlled enough and so they are doing further studies to see the effectiveness of the drug. The theory is that by lowering the amount of insulin produced, while potentially increasing blood sugar, usually reduces the blood sugar in normal people. They think that the drug is actually helping regulate the insulin production and therefore allowing people to better utilize the insulin they have.
Needless to say, I would like to take the drug in the UK, but I would need my GP to write a perscription for it to treat something that it is not likely to be approved for for several years, assuming the tests all go well.
