Anyone heard of this?  It is such a neat concept - hooks up people who are traveling with people who have an extra room or spare couch to crash on!  What an awesome concept!  I'm thinking of signing up... ;D

House-swapping is also quite popular.  You can find dozens of organisations online, meet people there, trade with the type of person you want (i.e., older singles who don't want a family of little ones in an un-safe house might trade with older singles; those with little tikes and toys trade with like, etc).  The advantage is that you have the same monthly expenses (your own rent and utilities, and groceries, which you'd purchase at home), some even swap cars, and you just have travel expenses to/from the holiday home.  Yes, you have to be careful, but it's quite a good deal.  Teachers like to radce with other teacers, since we have lots of extra breaks, but only teachers pay(!), which doesn't stretch through all those holidays!

I leave for work at 7:10 each morning, and get home at 6:00 each evening.  Wish I could stay home all day and do nothing but sit around on UKY!  What a life!  And I have no Internet access in my classroom, so I can't just stop teaching and surf UKY.  Can you believe it??  Horrid, my job!

i HIGHLY recommend couchsurfing.  i've been a member for a few months now and have surfed with a number of people.  it's an awesome way to meet local people and have them show the places to go and not to go in their area.  it's nice to have someone to talk to (especially if you're in a foreign country) and ask questions about what it's like to live there.

i've met some really awesome people....all of which were not nutters!!  the website is set up so that you can leave your comments on your experience after you stay with someone.  they are meant to be read by potentional people who would like to surf and to help them form an idea of the type of person you might be.

i could go on and on about the website.  i'm very thankful i read a previous post on uky where someone suggested it and actually signed up and couchsurfed!!

i heart couchsurfing.com!!
