relocating to London from NYC
« on: November 04, 2006, 07:00:57 PM »
Hi.

I will be relocating with my wife from my company's NY office to the London office. The office is located in Canary Wharf.
Could someone suggest where I should look for a flat to rent, taking into account commute to work and safety while being close to restaraunts and bars etc.

Thanks for the help.

You could look for a flat in Docklands.  They tend to be on the pricey side but you'd be close to work.  Docklands is not exactly Central London but with the DLR, it's easy to get around.

cool. thanks for the suggestion. What i'm trying to find is a place where wy wife, who won't be working (at least initially) won't go crazy sitting around all day. It would be nice if we live in a place where we could walk outside and have places to eat, drink, shop etc.. Are the Docklands like this? I for some reason envision the area around the office (Cabot Square) as a business district with little going on at night and on weekends which i'd rather avoid.
Also, is there an area where American expats generally tend to favor. We are pretty clueless about London but going for it regardless.

Given that you will be working in Canary Wharf, being on the Jubilee line would be very convenient for commuting. St. John's Wood, and Finchley Road stops along that line (in the northwest of London) would probably fit your bill. St. John's Wood is very popular with American expats (The American School in London is in this neighborhood), and Finchley Road is near Hampstead which is also home to lots of American expats, and has a nice village feel (lots of nice restaurants and shops, and right next to Hampstead Heath--plenty of room to wander!). These are all fantastic areas, but they do come at quite a cost!

I currently live in the Docklands area. (10 minute bus ride from Canary Wharf) It is pretty quiet on the weekends and at first I thought I wouldn't like that, but I actually do. Maybe because its really not that far to get into the center of London, so you kind of have the best of both worlds. There are parks and places to eat, but we tend to go into the center of London on the weekends.

Since my husband and I both work on the West side of London, we have decided to move over to the West to cut down on the commute. Have a look around Canary Wharf, I wouldn't rule it out. I know everyone is different, but we have been pretty happy there.
