Medical exemption card?
« on: March 14, 2007, 08:10:13 AM »
Basically, my question is, who do I ask about getting a medical exemption card?

I have seen mention on this board that I am eligible for a medical exemption card, which would mean I get all my prescriptions free, because I have thyroid disease and have to take daily medication for that. I just moved to the UK last month, and my prescription for thyoid meds from a UK doc is waiting for my husband to go pick up today. No one at the GP's office has yet mentioned this card and I forgot to ask. Would I ask the staff at the GP's office, or do I get that from the pharmacy? Or is there some other agency I need to contact?

Contact your pharmacy but also look at this PDF:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

when i went for my first appointment, the doctor filled out the form & had me sign.  i had to pay for my first RX of thryoxine (synthroid).  i got the card (valid for 5 years) in 2 weeks.  i then took the new card & the paid Rx receipt to my local post office and got a refund.  since you don't have the card yet, just save the recipet and you will be able to get a refund.  Viola!

the great thing is that it doesn't just give you free thryoid medication, but you don't pay for ANY of your medication.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Thanks for the info! I don't know why the doc didn't mention this to me when I went in. I also found some info online, so if anyone else wants to know more about the card, check this out:

Who can get a prescription exemption certificate?

People who have certain medical conditions

Although there are many conditions requiring permanent medication, only the following qualify for an exemption certificate:

A permanent fistula requiring dressing.
Forms of hypoadrenalism, such as Addison's Disease.
Diabetes insipidus and other forms of hypopituitarism.
Diabetes mellitus except where treatment is by diet alone.
Hypoparathyroidism.
Myasthenia gravis.
Myxoedema (underactive thyroid) or other conditions where supplemental thyroid hormone is necessary.
Epilepsy requiring continuous anti-convulsive therapy.
If, because of a permanent disability, you cannot leave the house without help.

If you have one of these conditions, get form FP92A from your doctor's surgery and fill it in. This is sent to the Prescription Pricing Authority who will issue a Medical Exemption Certificate.
