Bedroom Size
« on: January 24, 2007, 09:19:56 PM »
What are approximate dimensions for single rooms and double rooms? These seem to be the descriptions I find with letting agencies when they describe flats. These are new terms to me and I need help to know if my king size bed will fit in a double room and how much space my daughter will have in her single room.

Thanks  ;)

Hi,  I am not sure about dimensions but in my experience double room means it can fit a double bed.  And sometimes not much else!   If you are planning to bring a US king sizes bed with you I would definitely check with the agent for exact room dimensions.
And some single bedrooms are only big enough to hold a narrow single bed and a small chest.

Also a king size bed over here is the size of a US queen.  So if they say a king size bed will fit, make sure they understand a US king is bigger.  I think they are called super kings over here.

Many bedrooms have no closets and you need to find room for wardrobes as well as bed and chest.  Also doors and hallways and staircases are often much narrower.

Good luck!

You are definitely going to have to communicate with the estate agents over here.  My double bedroom currently can't fit anything other than the double bed and two bedstands.  We luckily have built in closets.  In the house I lived in before this, the main bedroom was huge and would have easily fit a king size bed (US style).  So you gotta ask!

As for single rooms - they tend to be used more for offices or maybe a crib and that's all.  I'd say she'd need another double size room or you won't fit her and her stuff and a bed in it!

Hi,
Not really much more to add to phillygirl's response!

There are no 'approximate' dimensions - but the general single and double bedrooms terms means a single bed or double bed will fit, leaving whatever space left for any other furniture you may have - wardrobes, desks, dressers etc. However, usually there isn't much room left over at all, unless you are lucky to find a spacious property.

A UK standard single bed is 3ft wide, and a double is 4ft 6in wide (I can't remember the length dimension) - unless you get or have a spacious bedroom/property, Queen size and above usually don't fit very well.

My suggestion is to speak to lettings agents/estate agents and ask them to find bedrooms of a certain size and above and see what they come back with. If they're within your budget and the rooms are big enough then great, if not, then you'll need to compromise - either get smaller beds, stump up more cash for a bigger place.

Good luck!

Some rooms advertised as single or double can be very tight for space -- As others have said, it really only means that's it's physically possible to fit a single or double bed in there, even if you then have only 18 inches of space all around it!

Agents' measurements are often only very approximate, some might include the depth of a fitted wardrobe, others might not.  So you really do need to ask very carefully and inspect for yourself.

And keep in mind if they tell you one of the rooms is a "box room", then that's pretty much all you can fit in there....a box.

there is hope when it comes to 'box' rooms..

My family has lived in a 1930's semi since 1983.. 3 bedrooms, but in reality it was 2 bedrooms and a box room. 1st Bedroom is quite a good size, double bed 2ft of space along one side of it and 4ft on the other, enough room for 2 walls to have floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes with around 3ft of space leftover for walking around. 2nd bedroom, should really only have a single bed in it, however we squeezed a double in, one wall of fitted wardrobes, a space about 2ft by 6ft to 'walk' in is all thats left.

the ''3rd bedroom" is 6ftx9ft! (I've seen walk in closets bigger than that in the US!) only a single bed will fit and there was about 3ft left for a wardrobe and thats it.

what we did in there was make a fitted floor to ceiling wardrobe, and over the bed bridging units with doors and shelving area underneath. All the stuff that usally would have been on the floor now fits nicely in those - leaving the small area left just to stand, get changed and check yerself out in the mirror in relative comfort! it's the best 'clever' utilisation of space we could think of in that room and surprisingly, lengthways against a wall there is even a 3 drawer dresser/bedside cabinet which is around 2.5 ft wide but the drawers only open 75% of the way before hitting the side of the bed! - we were proud it even fitted in!

a tip leading from this, although we 'permanently' fitted the wardrobes, prior to that I installed myself a similar setup from ready made furniture, obviously space at the top was wasted, but it did hang nicely for 10 years! - so you could do the same on a budget/rented place so long as the landlord allows you to drill into the walls to hold up the bridging units. Even if the have to come down, it's easy to fill the screw holes with filler and paint/wallpaper over again easily.

Hope this helps !

 ;D

You've seen those lists of "How to translate estate-agent jargon" haven't you?

"Covenient for transport"  = Trains run all night 20 ft. from your bedroom window.

"Useful outbuildings" = No indoor W.C.

"Ideal for DIYer" = You'll be spending every weekend for the next 5 years working on it.

my advice is to never take the agents' word for it--always go and see for yourself.

we were looking for a house all fall, and during the process we saw box rooms that you literally could barely fit two people into and then some that were more than adequate for a single bed and a wardrobe, with a little wiggle room to boot.

don't forget to bring a tape measure when you're viewing places.

Ya, we certainly got a bit burned by our agent.  We didn't have an opportunity to view the house we rent.  (They sent us pictures, though).

Supposed to be three bedrooms; only two.  Neither could take a US king-size bed.  Nevermind you'd never get it up the stairs. (Unless it was a rubber bed..)

Supposed to have wood floors.  Well, they DO make some nice plastic here...

There are a lot of broken/damaged bits in our house.  I've found out that the owners are trying to charge the previous tenants for the damage... but they certainly haven't fixed anything.  Pretty sure they'll try the same trick on us.

So, just an echo here... SEE the house before you take it!
