Do I have to file my taxes in the US?
« on: December 01, 2006, 11:19:13 AM »
I was just wondering, this is the first year since I was 14 that I haven't worked at all in the US. Since I've lived here in the UK, I've filed my US taxes using Tax Cut software, etc but since I have never mentioned income from here (so little that I didn't feel the need as well as not having given up NY residency for any tax reasons) I am not sure what to do this year. I don't want to have to pay $20.00 for the program and then another bit for state and then the two filing fees (one of which was never refunded last filing period :( ) when I don't need to.

So......do I need to file my US taxes this year?

If you income greater than your exemption then you must file US taxes - claiming the foreign earned income on UK wages if necessary.

If you had the equivalent of $10,000 in UK bank accounts at some stage then you also must file TDF90-22.1

I am not clear on what you are sayin about New York State.  If you have a requirement then you should also be filing in New York.

You can print out, fill out in ink and mail all of the forms if you do not wish to pay for computer aids.

When you say income greater than my exemption, what exactly do you mean?

I definitely dom't have the equivalent of $10,000 anywhere so that's no problem.

As for NY state, I know you can break residency from it if you are living outside the state for a certain amount of time. This makes it so that you legally won't have to pay taxes in the state. I learned this a few years ago on here actually. I've never done it as my state taxes were never that high.

I just know that in the past if I've not worked when I've lived in the US, I don't fill out the tax forms as there is nothing to fill out. This only happened once I think and since the same happened this year I wasn't sure
