Racquetball/Racketball in UK?
« on: November 21, 2006, 01:09:05 AM »
Hi,

I'm a newcomer to the board and will be a newcomer to the UK next month.  I'll be living outside London in Buckinghamshire.  I love racquetball, play 3x a week in US.  It's the most fun you can have exercising at the gym.  I love to work up a great sweat and not even realize I'm doing it.

I understand that racquetball is played on a squash court in the UK but any other info would be much appreciated.  Any one know of any clubs that are especially good for racquetball?

Thanks,

Carolyn

Carolyn-

I'm in London and just joined my council's local leisure centre, and one of the facilities (we have use of 7 throughout the council) has 10 squash courts. My husband is really into squash, and he's going to teach me to play. After looking around at a few chain clubs, and then the leisure centre, I found that there wasn't a whole lot of difference in the quality of the facilities, and the prices were better at the leisure centre. Maybe your council has similar facilities? Definitely check it out.

Thanks, Kate.  I found 2 clubs in Buckinghamshire that have 5 squash courts each.  I guess squash is really big over there.  We don't have squash clubs in my area in the US.  I am just wondering if anyone knows whether there is much racquetball being played on the squash courts.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ok, I feel a bit silly. I honestly thought that squash and raquetball were just two words for the same sport. I had no idea that squash was actually different from raquetball.  I'll ask my husband if he knows what the popularity of raquetball is over here.

You got me curious so I just did a little search on the differences between the two, and came across this link...might give you some good links.

Kate,
thanks so much for this helpful and informative site.  I hadn't found this site, despite numerous internet searches on the topic.

A lot of people confuse squash and racketball.  Probably even more in England because they're played on the same court there.

Please let me know what your husband has to say about racketball.  No one I've asked has anything encouraging to say but I've never consulted with a squash player.

Thanks again,

Carolyn
