insuring an engagement ring in the UK
« on: December 11, 2006, 09:27:50 PM »
(Not sure if this might be better off over in "Hitching Post" - feel free to move it if so!)

Now that I'm here in the UK for good, DF and I are trying to sort out a number of practical matters - including insurance for my engagement ring.  I've been searching online, but I haven't really found much of anything in the way of insuring an individual piece of jewelry - and as I'm still getting used to wearing a ring 24/7 (yes, I know it's been more than a year - I'm not a big jewelry person!), I'm more concerned about losing my ring rather than someone breaking into our flat and stealing it.

I'd really like to get this sorted out sooner rather than later.  Does anyone have any experience insuring a single item of jewelry (and specifically, a diamond engagement ring) here in the UK?  The jeweler (Blue Nile) offers insurance cover for US buyers/residents, but the UK version of the site doesn't seem to have a similar plan.

Thanks in advance! :)

Hiya,

Being Indian, we - mainly mum, has lots of high value gold and it's all insured under the home insurance policy. However, rather than keeping our house looking like tutankhamun (sp?) tomb, I think about 90% of it is kept in bank security deposit boxes and the fee for that includes insurance. The home policy only covers what's kept at home and you'll need to specify whats what and how much it's worth etc. I think the good thing is that once specified, if like us it sometimes resides in safety deposit boxes and other times is at home, then you dont have to keep informing the insurance company where it is. In your case, seeing as you'll have it with you till getting hitched day, so long as you mention it on your policy you should be covered.

There may be specialist insurance polices out there - maybe others know of something?! but seeing as home/contents insurance covers jewellery, I'd say this would be your best course of action

Cheers!

Thanks, Dennis!

I'll have to check whether or not it's something that can be covered under our renter's insurance - if not, we'll find new renter's insurance!

Thanks, Aimiloo!

We've just amended our renter's insurance to include my ring - I'm so relieved to have it all taken care of before my trip to the States, and that it was so easy!

Will renters insurance cover it if it's lost, not stolen from your home?

Also make sure that there aren't limits for particular items.  Sometimes the policy covers, let say £40,000 of household goods, but might limit electronics to say only £4,000.  You need to check your specific policy because they do very and if you have something, they can always add a rider for a fee to cover a specific item over the value.

I would also make sure it is still covered if the loss occurs outside of the UK>
