I'm pretty sure crochet needles are a no.  The last time I flew, United had them on the "banned from hand luggage" list because of their potential as a weapon, so I doubt they relaxed that.

It seems so silly, 8 hours of sitting in one spot?  Perfect for knitting, crocheting, or neddlework.

Yeah, if you have an extra, try it.  Let me know how it goes...I might do the same thing.

according to the TSA you can take crochet/knitting needles on board.

I am surprised you got hassled before.  I was flying about 2 months after 9/11 and this lady was sitting there with a huge gigantic crochet needles.  I grab one of the flight attendants, thing that if the little blades on nail clippers weren't allowed, there was no way a big f***off needle like that was allowed and he told me that no, those are actually allowed, shrugged his shoulders and walked off.

I mean if I have to eat with plastic knives on the plane and for a while wouldn't let me on with my Starbucks, but they let on metal knitting needles, something is a bit strange.

Hmmm...maybe I was singled out by someone having a bad day....

Personally, I think all these restrictions are insane.  I can only speak for myself, but I'm almost dreading my flight....because I'm worried I'm going to have the slightest detail wrong.  I understand the need for security..but there needs to be some cut and dry consensus between everyone

Yup, we are dreading it... we are moving in 1 week and our carryons are full of electronic devices– voltage transformers, a scanner (for our computer), and more. Hopefully we won't have any issues. I am sure it will take forever though...

Oh here is something I read on the tsa site... gel liqui-caps (like Day-quil), even in the blister packs must be in your quart sized zip baggie. You may wear a gel filled bra but you may not wear gel shoe inserts (like Dr Scholls) in your shoes or even in your carryon in your zip baggie! Gel shoe inserts must be in checked baggage!! What the heck are terrorists going to do with those!! I was wondering if I could wear them in my bra? ::)

Tell you what... when I went through the security at Gatwick and in the states a couple weeks ago, my carry on was filled with tons of christmas presents that weren't food or liquid and/or sharp. I had our digital camera, video camera, mobile phone, charger and adapter all in there as well. I had my little bits in the quart sized bag.   They are very big on the quart sized bag thing before you even approached security by handing the bags out (at Gatwick that was). Did anyone stop to examine anything I had? Not once!!  It almost seemed pointless.

Well, it was a bit pointless putting your non-liquids in plastic bags... it is only liquids < 100ml.  I fly almost on a weekly basis and the only thing that ever gets checked on me is my CPAP (a medical breathing device) and even then sometimes that doesn't get checked.

There have been reports now that the whole scare thing couldn't have happened, because of the volume of chemicals that would have been needed to sneak on board and the fumes and smells mixing them would have caused.  As well as charges in Pakistan have been dropped against the supposed ring leader.  Of course the UK still thinks they have a case against the others they are holding.
