We just bought our DVD player at Curry's and they will either give you the hacker code to make it multi-regional, or you can go to the Curry's website and look up your model and get the code there. Also, my husband's cheap little Argos VCR plays my VHS movies, but his mum's expensive one doesn't. Weird.
