What tube line runs to Edinburgh?

This is just one of the bizarre questions dealt with by staff on a daily basis at one of Britain's busiest tourist centres.

Wow...just, wow.

I love the one about Windsor being built on under Heathrow flight path. It reminds me of one time when I was visiting my grandparents in Virgina, and overheard one tourist say to another "isn't it a coincidence that all of these great Civil War battles took place in national parks?"

Um....yeah.

I remember reading that tourists show up daily in the summer to Stratford in east London wanting to visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

We were up in Edinburgh over New Years and decided to go shopping along the Royal Mile.  Dh and I overhead an american say to his partner "why is all stuff Scottish?  I want to find some British stuff!"  ummm.... hello!!!

A couple of summers ago, I worked in the giftshop of our local 12th century castle. Some American tourists came in one day and said, "It's such a shame they've let it go like this."

I think the funniest thing I've heard personally was when I told my half-sister I was moving to England and she asked if they spoke english there

I had a friend from the US ask me why everyone in London was flying the "Swedish flag."....she was referring to the English flag, the Cross of St. George.

Hee hee...  I almost fell over when I read the topic.  I thought Cait was really asking!

  

It is funny... my partner and I often joke around on the tube, shaking our head at Americans... He makes me say in my loud, as heavily accented American voice "We should take the black line to LIE-KESTER square"

I know I shouldn't make fun of my follow Americans, but it is funny!

BTW, I did think for just a moment too that cait was actually asking that question...

The tube to Edingburgh thing is just dumb, however, some are honest mistakes.  For example, if you weren't from New York City you wouldn't know their Houston Street is pronounced HAUS-ton and not HUES-ton.  Same here.  When I started coming over, my then boyfriend worked in Southwark.  Before he actually said the word, I thought it was SAUTH-wark.  It would have never crossed my mind that it wasn't so.  Same was for Leicester, Chiswick, etc.  Those mistakes I don't make fun of because you don't know until you know, if that makes any sense.  However, the other stupidities are really funny.

it happens in opposite too! even when I was little I liked geography and used to look at maps of the world etc, I will always say 'San jose' but with the 'j' sound and not the 'h' sound! I know it's 'hozay' but I just cant say it like that! it always comes out as 'josay' or 'josey' - I know New Orleans is 'nawlins' but i will always say it as i see it ' new or lee ans' ! 

whenever I'm in the US, even when I do pronounce things correctly - I always get the 'hey where are you from? australia? ireland or england?' question !

Yes, I suspect one day I will return to the states and they will ask me where I am from...  Even after 2 years away, I quickly returned pronouncing things different again.  Process changed from "Prawcess" to "Pro-cess", Been has changed from "ben" to "been", Tomato change from "Tomaytow" to "Tomawtow", etc...

I found myself talking to my mom in my "British" voice versus my "American" voice now again and my mom will always say I am sounding funny...  I am sure that it will finally take its toll in a few years and I won't be able to easily switch back and be some sort of "bastard child" of pronunciation.
