Customs C 3 Form...
« on: November 05, 2006, 12:37:33 AM »
For those of you who have shipped just a couple boxes of personal belongings over, did you fill out a C 3 Form?  Also did you fill out a copy of the form with each box?  I moved my house already but I have been living in a temporary apartment for a while and have a few things that I need to ship over because I don't want to bring them on the plane.

I shipped three boxes over...for each, I filled out a customs form that the post office gave me.  I'm not sure if it was a C3 form or not.  It basically asked me to declare what was in the box (I put "used household goods (books, toys, pet supplies)" or some such for each) and asked for my address in the US, in the UK, and where to send the box if it couldn't be delivered to the UK address (we used DF's dad).  The insurance we'd purchased for each box was also listed.

Like I said, I don't know if these were C3 forms or not, but my stuff got here just fine, and with no problems - the 4-10 day airmail one arrived 11 days later, and the two 6-8 week surface mail ones arrived at six weeks and eight weeks, respectively.

It depends on how you're shipping things, of course, but if it's through the USPS/Parcelforce, they should be able to provide the necessary form....

A C 3 Form is a form when using a moving company to move your household goods...  I had to fill out one when I moved the house with the movers.  It allows you to get through stuff, if you are getting married, totally duty free.  Here is the URL for the form: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageTravel_Forms&propertyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_000308

I can't seem to find any information on if you are just shipping boxes or not.  So I think I will take your route and just do the normal customs form.  If they get mad at me, I will figure out how to sort it out then.  The C 3 form is like 4 pages for each box.

I shipped over a cubic meter of boxes containing my belongings.  I did fill in customs forms, once in the US, and then through a glitch, once in the UK.  I don't know if they were the C3 form or not, but they were for importing into Britain.  I also had to denote what each box contained, but I'm sure you're way ahead and already knew that.  Also, I had to declare that they were not new items so that I wouldn't have to pay VAT on them.  I hope that is a little helpful for you.  Sorry, it was 5 months ago, and I had a lot going on, so I don't remember noticing the exact title of the form!   :)

Edited:  The forms were given to me by the moving company, and it was fine and the boxes were released to me with no problems.

persephone, most likely they were C 3 forms... where they like four pages long, basically said you marked "I was moving for Mairriage" and have a list of prohibited items like "no switch knives, no horror comics"?

Hmmm... Well at least if they let you ship them and clean up the paperwork later then I guess I would be ok.  Thanks for the feedback.

yes, then it was those forms.  I did fill them out before I left the US and sent them in, but for some reason they didn't reach the England office, so I had to fill them in over here.  Like I said, I'm pretty sure that was a glitch.

I'm reviving an older thread to ask a probably stupid question.  We are going to be shipping a few boxes over and it seemed the best thing to do was to use the c3 form (from everyone's experience).  My question is if you say you are moving for marriage, how long before the move can your marriage have taken place? In our case, we'll have been married 1.5 years at the time of our move.  Anybody know if i can still use this form?

I believe that you would not be moving over for marriage.  I had been married for 4 years when I moved.  I think that ticking the marriage box allows you to bring a greater value of new items (wedding gifts) into the country.  Otherwise, you're stuck with the previously owned personal items.

Thanks! I just read back over the form again and must be losing my mind.  For some reason  i thought you could only use this form for moves related to marriage ::) No idea why i thought that.

Did you fill out anything on the Goods Liable for import charges page or just write none and include your packing slip with your list of items?
