London Map
« on: December 28, 2006, 07:44:23 AM »
Can anyone tell me where I might find a street map of London that has tube and bus stops overlayed on top of the streets?

So that if I need to find out to get to a particular address in London - not a tourist destination - I can just look up the street on the index, find the address on the map, and then see the nearest tube or bus stop?

I know that there are New York City maps that do this.

Have you not gotten yourself a London A-Z yet?  They are available just about everywhere in London.  Tourist shops as well as all major bookstores.  I haven't seen any with an overlay  but there's an index at the back with all the street names, a tube map on the back, and all the tube stops marked on the actual map.  We still use ours even after a few years living here and DH has grown up with it and still uses his!

I don't live in London. I live in York. I've only been to London twice in my life.

I was looking for something for business travel.

But I will see if I can get an A-Z here in York. Tube stops marked on the street map is what I need. I can find a tube map anywhere; I need to know how to get to the destination from the tube, and vice versa. As I don't live in London, and have hardly spent any time there,  it's not automatically familiar to me.

Thanks.

Stop by a bookstore and check out the London InsideOut book. We use it every time we go to London and it is great! It has a map with the main sites/attractions and tube stops over the street names. Oh yeah, and it comes with a compass. The best thing is it is a small book that easily fits into a purse/bag. It is easy to use as well, because the map pops-up/folds down into the book and you  aren't standing in the street with a giant map looking like a tourist!  :D  It also has sites/restaurant information, opening hours of things, a separate Tube map, and main bus route map in it.

Here is a link to the book on Amazon:

You should definitely be able to find a London A-Z in York (or you can pick them up from just about anywhere once you get into London!)

Having the tube stops on the street map is indeed very helpful- saved my butt a few times when I was wandering around London last year. :)

You will find ones with the tube stops like the A-Z but not the buses, they are much more complicated and plentiful!  I am usually armed with my mini A-Z and a bus map.

Sorry didn't mean to sound rude. I thought maybe you had moved to London recently.  :) But as everyone else said you can get them at any major bookstore.  I know some of the other major cities even do their own A-Z as well. Good luck, you willl enjoy London. It's a great place to visit!

Thanks.

Waterstone's actually did not have a London A to Z, but they did have some street maps with the tube stations, so I picked one up.  I was hoping to find something on the internet, but I guess that wasn't to be.

I also picked up a book of maps of 100 city centres in the UK, for when I get sent to meetings/courses elsewhere.

I know exactly what you are talking about but I have never seen one here for sale.

The London Buses map is the closest thing I have used and have only found them at train stations and not very readily. They make one for central London and the four greater quandrants of London. The paper map folds out and shows major streets, train stations, tube stops and bus routes. They are distributed by Transport for London on a regular basis allowing for updates to be made as needed. It might be worth calling or sending them a message if they have any to send or where you can find a copy. Tourist info may be another place that holds a stash you can try when you get here.

or simply use the tfl.gov.uk site to map out your route before you go... that's what many of us Londoners do. It is supposed to take into consideration the most up to date route closures, etc.

just bumping this topic up to share a cool page on the transport for london site- it's a tool in flash where you can see a non-stylized tube map that more accurately represents the distance between stations...and it comes with a cool streetmap overlay!  It's only for central London, but it's worth taking a look at, IMO:
