Thanks!  I checked here because I was about to try to get the UK account.  It was very useful that you put in the phone number.  I called it and asked to open a UK account, and the guy said it would be no problem.  They are going to send the paperwork.  Wow!  Now I just have to hope that the rest of the process goes smoothly as well.  4-6 is actually pushing it.  I think I am at just under 10 weeks before the move, so I had better not dawdle in filling out the forms, and I hope there estimate is at least close.

I just did all the paperwork and sent it in... Here are my suggestions... we had a joint account and we applied for a credit card in GBP as well for both of us so our paperwork may have been different than wat you will get.. But for me some of the terminology was confusing. Hubby is a brit and he laughed at me as it is in british terms but i called the bank and any questions I had they walked me though and it was easier that way.

Then i sent it certified, because they needed copies of my passports, tax records for last year, and a few other things and i didnt want those getting in the wrong hands. This way I know it did arrive.

Did they tell you they can hold it for you in the UK if you are moving sooner? Then you just go to the branch in UK and pick it up.

Glad its all working out...
Kath

No, the guy who helped me didn't mention that, but it's a good idea!

I think we will go into a branch in person with our paperwork once it is all filled in so that we can just show them all our documents in person rather than mailing them off.  We are going in to apply for visa at end of Jan and leaving end of Feb, so we need to keep our passports!

Thanks for this but yes i had heard of pay pal and had spme bad experiences with them so i chose to go to a bank instead.. that way i have someone to come after if they loose my money...

You have kids in the states too? How is that working for you? My son will be staying in UNI here when we leave and its going to be very different for all of us.

Thanks
Kath

That was pretty fast!

We are moving to London.  It will be a big adventure (no jobs lined up, just a one-month flat at the mo...)!

Where are you going?

Update:  Have received both debit card and cheque book for the UK account!  We didn't get my partner on the account when it was opened because her passport was with the US government being renewed, so we are going this weekend to add her to it.  The folks at the International Banking Center here in the US have been great.  Today I e-mailed them to ask if we could add my partner through the DC branch.  I got an e-mail back within a few hours; the person who responded said that she had requested the appropriate form from the UK and forwarded it to a rep at the DC branch who would be ready to help us with that.  I have heard people complain about HSBC but so far the service I have gotten from the IBC and the DC branch has been really great.  If you have time before the move to the UK, I do recommend this route to have an account all set up before the move.
