Airfare gambling!
« on: February 06, 2007, 07:50:07 PM »
I have been keeping my eye on airfares lately and everyday them seem to creep up in price.  I am getting anxious.

Should I play it cool a little while longer and hope for a fare sale (unlikely due to my travel dates) or suck it up and shell out now? Gasp, I have even started considering the option of making a layover to save $250.  :o

Fortunately, I am still flying on return tickets to the states so I save money originating in the US.  :)

I am not a gambler!  :-\\\\

When are you travelling?  There are some good fare sales on right now (I've found $325 one way Vegas to Edinburgh, only one stop in Atlanta), but of course as you get closer to spring and summer the fares are going to get more expensive.  I find that I reach the point where I just buy the tickets, then force myself to STOP looking at the airfares!  Nothing more depressing than finding that if I'd just waited a week I could have saved some money!
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

June-December. I think the best I am going to get is one I just found with lots of tweaking of dates on BA is $834. That's not too much... more than the $500 tickets I bought a few months ago but nothing compared to the $1250 tickets I have been looking at!!

I think I will bite the bullet and buy it and stop looking!!!  [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

At least I won't have a layover!!! ;D

Have you tried sidestep.com?  It's my current favourite 'airfare trawler'.  I think you can specify that you prefer direct flights...

I like Yahoo Farechase. I haven't used sidestep in ages so I will give it a try again.

So I found this great fare and it turned out to be the wrong date! I think it might be worth waiting because it seemed to have an effect on the return price... the whole advanced purchase thing might be for suckers at times. It went back up to $1200.  :P

If you decide to give sidestep a try, just make sure you are using the US site.  The exact same search, departing from the US, will show you more expensive airfares if you're using the UK site.

My fiance and I have already booked tickets for our June-July trip to the states. We got it about a week ago, and the very next day, the same tickets went up $300!!!

Hmmm, maybe it's time for me to book our August trip. I was hoping to use frequent flier miles but I doubt I'll get them at this point.

Virgin was offering cheap tickets yesterday, as low as 218 pounds roundtrip to NYC.
